Owls Keeper Chase Hots Up

Fulham stopper Tony Warner and Birmingham 'keeper Nico Vaesen are the latest names to be linked with a summer move to the Owls as the chase for a goalkeeper hots up.

Owls boss Paul Sturrock said he wanted a new stopper in place before pre-season training begins this coming Monday, and the Premiership pair are seen as an ideal replacement for David Lucas.

Sturrock's number one choice is Liverpool youngster Scott Carson who made nine appearances at Hillsborough on-loan towards the end of the season - but Rafa Benitez is stalling on a decision.

His fate may depend upon the future of back-up Liverpool 'keepers Jerzy Dudek and Chris Kirklands, whose future's at the Anfield club are still unclear.

The 32-year-old Warner has made 20 appearances for the Craven Cottage outfit and has enjoyed loan spells at Celtic, Cardiff City and Swindon Town after previously appearing in between the sticks for Millwall.

He's unlikely to command a high transfer fee or wages which will suit the Owls.

Other names to be mentioned with the Owls number one jersey are Celtic's Dave Marshall, Plymouth Argyle stopper Romain Larrieu and Birmingham City's veteran stopper Nico Vaesen.

The Owl's boss is likely to make a decision sooner rather than later as the start of pre-season training looms.
