Mandaric: Owls Building For Future

Wednesday chairman Milan Mandaric insists the Owls are building a squad for the future, and not just to achieve the the short-term goal of promotion this season.

Mandaric, who officially took control at Hillsborough last month, has helped Owls boss Alan Irvine bolster his squad with two defensive additions in the January transfer window already, with at least four more arrivals lined-up.

But the Owls supremo insists he's helping build a young squad for the future of the club, and not just the present.

His comments come with the news that Wednesday are still chasing the signing of Motherwell defender Mark Reynolds, despite have a bid knocked back for the young defender.

Mandaric told the Sheffield Star: 'We are looking to strengthen the defence a bit more; we are trying to bring in young players to build a team not only for the short term but for the future.'

Reda Johnson and Michael Morrison, both of whom signed last week, are both young defenders who have had plenty of experience in the Football League.

Reynolds will follow suit, with the 23-year-old earning positive reviews north of the border and attracting the interest of Scottish giants Rangers not so long ago.

And Mandaric has revealed that 'there's dialogue going on' with Motherwell as Irvine looks to get his man and make it a treble defensive swoop in the January transfer window.

i actually think super milan could walk on water, its exciting once again to follow the wednesday. In hindsight, relegation is the best thing that ever happened to us.

Agree didn't like it at the time who did! But look now were building a team to get us in premiership or carry us most of the way, instead of has beens and freebies! I will say this though get mellor bloody signed!!!

Agree with mellor, he should have been the first signed up, prestons new manager might fancy having him back in the summer. its been said we lost 3 million by being relegated. So if we stayed up, our tax bills would probably have been covered and no pressure to sell for the shareholders, who knew relegation would have been the start of something good.

It's great to get on this sight to see what good news has come, rather than dreading it and wondering how much lower we can sink! What a change in just a couple of months. I remember when all the new signings were my age, and that's not a good thing!

The most difficult thing is not to get greedy now, so pleased we are finally chasing proper players though. Morrison and Johnson are fairly raw but highly rated and Reynolds has good write ups, just so pleased they aren't has beens on the gravy train!

Have just been looking at the league table, and what a must win game on saturday against Charlton it is, after tonight's games we will have dropped down one maybe two place's, so if we don't get 3 points on saturday it will not be looking too good for us, we could be as low as 12th after this weekend, so come on boy's nothing less than 3 point's please.

Need to be taking 9 points from next three, if not full twelve from next 4 league games to stay in contention ecco

That's a good point realrain. Important to keep a cool head with this money and getting that balance between placing it wisely and yet quickly enough. Seems like AI and MM know what they're doing at the helm.

Agree,we must beat Charlton on Saturday as Southampton look to be hitting some top form with that 6-0 hammering of Oldham last night. We need to start winning consistently to remain near top.

When we signed Morrison last Thursday, Milan said on radio Sheffield we should have another 4 players signed up before our next home game, according to radio Sheffield last night we might be in for the pig Michael Tonge, could'nt think of anybody worse to sign than a reject pig, what does everbody else think.

Tonge never really delivered on his early promise and he is 27 now, but then he has been highly rated and has spent most of his time playing in the league above us. Probably would be a good signing but he was a blade and so i don't really want him

Agree with you both, just for fun though. Can either of you say/name any blade past/present in the last 5years you would want/have at hillsborough ! Personally big fat zero !

Something we did check up some years ago INOUTFLS, how many players come from the pigs directly to us, we found 1 player in the fifties, but them lot have been trying to sign anybody that have been with us or linked with us for years, so what does that tell you, jealous to death of us, but no i can honestly say none in the last 30 years.

unlike sheff utd we have never really felt the need to disrespect our fans by acquiring players from our biggest rivals and i dont really expect that to start now. cresswell, geary, quinn, brondby who else? cant think of top of me head.
