Owls Home In On Fifth Signing

Wednesday could have a fifth new signing in place for this Saturday's npower League One fixture at Leyton Orient.

Owls vice chairman Paul Aldridge has confirmed to the Sheffield Star that he's expecting to start discussions with a player 'in the next 24-48 hours'.

Boss Alan Irvine has outlined the players he wants to bring to Hillsborough in the January transfer window and Aldridge, appointed to his position by chairman Milan Mandaric last week, conducts the contract talks with players and agents to conclude a deal.

Wednesday have already bolstered their squad this month with the arrival of four players.

Reda Johnson, Michael Morrison, Gary Madine and Mark Reynolds have all arrived in S6 in recent weeks.

But Mandaric and Irvine are keen to bring at least six new players into the club to bolster their push for promotion to the Championship.

Aldridge refused to give any hints as to who the player was, but it's understood Irvine is targeting a midfield player.

Keith Andrews, of Blackburn Rovers, has been one name loosely linked with a loan move to Hillsborough.

But, like the Madine transfer on Saturday, Wednesdayites may not know the target until a deal is completed.

I think either tom soares or keith andrews be happy with either
Charlie Austin and a creative midfielder please.
Carbone's Padawan
Tom Soares? Didn't exactly pull up any trees for us last season, Probably better off with what we already have!!
Beckham on a months loan?
Patrick Blondeau
i'd give soares the benefit of the doubt, hadnt played all season and was put out on the wings at ours on a fair few occasions. The mighty coke might be back at the weekend so all's good.
Would be very happy with austin and andrews
LoL Blondeau
Carbone's Padawan
the return of none other than Benito Carbone?
Carbone's Padawan
I can't tell you how wild I'd go if that happened.
Carbone's Padawan
Read that Austin has handed in a transfer request and Marc Bridge-Wilkinson has had his contract terminated.......Wouldn't be a bad signing, a box to box midfielder and always see his name on Soccer Saturday chipping in with goals!!!!
Sorry, Bridge-Wilkinson has signed for Darlington
ha, that was a short lived 20 seconds of hope you had there Hickyowl1977
Andrews for me he didnt look out of place when i saw him playing for blackburn would do an excelent job for us plus he knows this division and if it is true about austin id pick him up myself he looks like he knows where the net is exciting times!
Didn't Andrews hobble off with quite a bad injury for Blackburn a few games ago? Sounds right up our street if it was him!
Owls That!
Akpo Sodje? Treatment room's looking a bit bare these days.
Carbone's Padawan
Tom're having a bleedin laugh! Wouldn't even wish him on the Blunts!
Kevin Phillips???
andrews would be a good signing, cant see us getting austin or phillips. Jennings from tranmere would be a decent signing-young winger with pace to burn, just what we need.
id have soares back, stick him in the middle of the park, hes not a bad player. he was wasted on the wings but when in the middle looked good. and id adore to have charlie austin, massive talent
Agree that Soares would be quality played in his natural position in League One. Lawsy always played 4 central midfields in a 4 man midfield so not Soares fault that he found himself shunted out on the flank! There's talk of Irvine bringing in another wide man for the right too but wonder who that may be?!
Matt Richards not happy at Walsall he would fit nicely into our midfield. He can hit a cracking free kick as well.
vic mobley
Soars hasn't done anything to prove he's going to be a decent pro. I'd rather see a Andrews in fairness, not exactly an eye for goal, but a decent midfielder. Not hugely different to what we have though. Charlie Austin is a cracking player, but we've just bought a striker with similar attributes (height) recently. Base case, we somehow convince Giles De Bilde he has unfinished business with us.....!!
anyone know who this player could be?
I would like a decent defensive midfielder, olifinjana type from wolves would be nice, I do not know whose avIlable but that type I'd love to see, someone who can command, boss and hold the midfield.
In all fairness, neither Soares OR Andrews are Premiership class which is why they don't play. When Soares was at Crystal Palace he was quality so just needs to find that form again and think League One might just be the place! Saying that though, we need a real commanding player in the midfield with a bit of bite and it would be nice to find a real gem of a player from one of the African playing nations. Someone who is raw but rugged!!
According to we're getting Lee Hughes from Notts County for 200,000 in next few days. Gonna have to change our name to Sheffield Cons FC if this one comes off. Can't see why we'd need another striker though? Especially one at 34 year old!!
god i hope its not lee hughes, especially at that age. be a waste of 200,000. We have 4 strikers at the club now, lets leave it at that and concentrate on the midfield.
The the rumour mill is certainly rolling!! I have heard via a sports journalist I follow on twitter that we are in for Lee Hughes and Brentfords Myles Weston with Darren Purse going to Millwall! All filthy rumours dont believe anything til I see it on Sky Sports News!!
Exactly DEZZYP what happened to building a young squad for the future? Lee Hughes is no asset to the club. his value is only going one way at that age.
Wasnt we in for Hughes before when Laws was in charge?i agree with we dont need him and thought we was building for the future. Please Mr Chairman dont let this happen.
