Owls Links With Hughes Heat Up

Reports linking Wednesday with a swoop for Notts County striker Lee Hughes have upped a gear over the last 24 hours.

The Owls have been reported to be interesting in bringing the 34-year-old to Hillsborough in the January transfer window for a fee believed to be around 200,000.

The Mirror yesterday reported Wednesday's interest in the former West Brom man, who has netted ten goals for County so far this season.

And the Nottingham Evening Post has today followed it up by claiming Hughes, who is a fans' favourite at Meadow Lane, could be set to receive a bid from S6.

It would be a strange move for the Owls, given that they signed Gary Madine from Carlisle United at the weekend to bolster an attack which already includes Neil Mellor, Clinton Morrison and Paul Heffernan.

But you know what they say, there's no smoke without fire, and with Owls chairman Milan Mandaric insisting Wednesday are looking to bring at least six new signings to the club this month, Hughes could well be on Alan Irvine's radar.

NOOOO thank you!!
don't want him - he's past it and didn't he get done for drink driving or summat?
Patrick Blondeau
I'll give Notts County a tenner to keep him lol
yep killed a man and then ran away from the scene. NO THANKS FROM ME AS WELL.
It'll look like we've nicked Uncle Fester from the Adams family across town!
Hahaha couldn't have said it better myself benemm
definitely don't want him. on the upside purse might be on his way - millwall & palace interested - i'll give them more than a tenner to take the useless plank of wood...
Patrick Blondeau
who we going to sign next luke mccormack
One old past it player in one old past it player out. Don't see the benefit if I'm honest.
Dont need him, waste of money and for the love of god, get rid of purse.
very strange one i think.BUT NO THANKS NOT IF HE WAS THE ONLY STRIKER IN THE WORLD. I know we have money but lets not waste it.With regards Purse i think he knows his time is coming to a end with the signings we have.He has been so inconsistant i would take money now for him.
200k on a 34yr old?? Please NO!!!!!
Just heard on another site that he's having a medical at Huddersfield. Fingers crossed.....
Take money for him? id pay him to go and give him a piggy back all the way down. In regards to hughes, the mirror is hardly the most reliable source, it might as well be called the daily bull5h1t.
who hughes or purse - if we could give town purse that would boost our promotion hopes no end!!!
Patrick Blondeau
it would be keeping along side our team of convicts were buying maybe causs MM is in court he likes to be surrounded by aggessive dodgy people after all he has employed PA as vice chairman and brought RJ and GM to the club who next joey Barton
I meant Hughes patrick. Sorry should have been clearer on that
if the management deem we need a guy who can come on and score a goal in order for us to get a result and ultimately go up then sign him. if mandaric is happy to pay 200k for half a seasons work then that is upto him. if you look at hughes goals per game record it is impressive and still is this season. horses for courses
Hirsty's Shinpads
Do the crime do the time, that's what he's done, so if he's gonna get this club up if that's what the club thinks then get him in!!
Id rather pay 200k for a promising YOUNG player from Ireland or the lower leagues? I would not take this man on if you gave me the 200k personally! Serving 3yrs for killing someone is not reflective of the crime in my opinion and whilst the sentence he served is not his fault but the crap justice system we have, I still dont think its fair? Plus, didn't he leave Oldham for putting the legendary John Sheridan in a headlock during a ***** up? NO, NO, NO and, again, NO!
Owls That!
Thats true Owls That,he did that to John Sheridan, and agree with u also on our crap justice system,3 years for taking a life and running from the scene makes it worse, shud av got life. Please Mr Chairman DO NOT let this happen.
I wouldnt hold his past against him we need to get out of this div. problem is next year he would be too old. need to invest in younger players
2 lives, actually... a woman died of her injuries later and a third who was in the struck car is crippled. None-the-less, 200K for a 34-year old striker seems a bit much. Yes, it's MM's money, but I'm sure it could be put to better use. To be fair garrymo... I WOULD take him if he were the ONLY striker in the world... that would put is at quite an advantage ;o)
Colorado Owl
I wouldnt want him for sure.Putting aside his prison conviction,he is too old and 200,000 is alot of cash for someone who would be substitute at best.We dont need another striker, use the cash for a young midfielder, the lad Weston from Brentford looks promising.
leons gloves
whether you think he has served a suitable time of not is absolutely irrelevant. He has done his time as set by the judicial courts, if you dont like that then tough, you can always emigrate. Sick of people going on about his past, everyone makes mistakes, i know ive made a few just because he is a footballer does not mean he should be treated any differently to anyone one of us. To be fair i wouldnt be too keen for 200k at 34 but id happily take him for 75k to 100k cos he will more than likely score ten goals for us before the end of the season, we dont have a poacher at the club.
what bout heffernan?
I'm sure him reda + madine can share a prison cell
Yes I would think 75k, use him till end of season then call it a day as he wil be to slow in the higher league if we get there. cant believe we are going for another striker where a midfield player would do,feel sorry for heff. not realy been given a chance
At the end of the day his previous convictions have nothing to do with hom as a player. if he can do the business and get us goals then ill welcome him to the club. MAdine and Johnson are criminals but that doesnt mean we dont want them at the club. a bit of experience upfront and knows where the new is as his record shows. if mandaric is willing to pay,let lee hughes play !
Ok ozzietheowl, have you made a mistake on this scale? I've made mistakes, everyones made mistakes, but then there are MISTAKES! And if you think people feel strongly about this just becasue he's a footballer your sorely mistaken? The simple way to look at it is if he had done that to your family member would you still be on here spouting that same comment? Criminal history aside, I still would not have him!
Owls That!
We may as well play in black and white stripes next season at this rate! Don't want Hughes in a Wednesday shirt!
I'm with Owls That on the whole 'scale of a mistake' comment. I've missed the occasional birthday but killing someone and driving away from the scene of a crime means he has something within him that's not welcome at Wednesday!!

Feel so strongly I had to post it twice :)
If that MURDERER puts on our Blue and White then I boycott Hillsborough until he leaves or better still has a nasty accident himself!!
Not happy about this link - hope it doesn't come off.
Carbone's Padawan
Fussy lot 2 months ago we would have sold the club to peter sutcliffe if he had the money.
brinsworthowl says here we want 2 strikers from notts county, i'd like to see AI concentrate on that central midfield area.
Not sure referring to johnson and madine as criminals is strictly accurate, as far as I'm aware neither has been convicted of anything...yet! Hughes on the other hand is a convicted criminal who was found guilty and served time for his crime so calling him a criminal is factually correct.
Agree with you there SUSSEXOWL and although Madine and Johnson have dates in court they haven't been found guilty of anything yet. On top of that what Hughes did was awful and doesn't sit well with me at all. He should not even be allowed to make money from football any longer whether he's served his time or not!
so what everyone seems to think is that once you have committed a crime then you should never have a second chance? What a load of self righteous bull!
Not at all! Ill give anyone a second chance if, like you say, they have served their time? You think that 3yrs for killing someone is ok? Whether it was et by the justice system or not its not right! He was a footballer earning thousands a week before he went in and he's still afforded the luxury of doing the same thing after he comes out whilst his poor family are left with a massive whole in their life? you tell me how that is fair? You can call it self rigtheous bull all you like but if you've got that attitude, than that is nothing more than plain ignorance? Football is not that big in the grand scheme of things? If he signs for a few goals for one season, the financial cost will be far outweigh the opportunity cost by the number of fans who refuse to go and pay on the turnstyle, renew season tickets etc whilst someone like that is associated our club!
Owls That!
He's certainly taking the most of his second chance and making a fortune at the same time! I wonder what flash car he's driving around in now?! Shouldn't even be allowed to hold a licence any more never mind play football and earn such a decent crust without giving something back to the community or family who's life he turned upside down! Football fans are so fickle at times and think that scoring a few goals here and there make up for his past!
hes not allowed a license until 2014 i think but i doubt he would ever drive.
im sorry but i believe hes done his time, any one of us could run over and kill someone, the thing he did wrong was failing to stop but hes served his sentance, anyway ive heard its westcarr were after not hughes
I'm from Nottingham and the local press here indicates that we're after both. Westcarr is just in a purple patch and is nothing special by all accounts talking to the County fans at work. Surely there are better alternatives?!
how do you know that he doesn't give anything back to the community or the family he destroyed? because i've heard that he does. don't get me wrong i'm not sticking up for this bloke but there is a lot stuff written above supposedly as fact that is incorrect
Hirsty's Shinpads
Im thinking way out the box here but remember DJ Campbell and how he got picked up after the FA Cup playing for Yeading? What about that Adam Birchall at Dover Athletic? Top Scorer in the FA Cup so far and looks the sort of forward we could do with to play off Mellor or Madine? Probably gonna get shot down in flames for it but if we're possibly prepared to offer 200k for Hughes on a punt why not half, if not a quarter, for this guy? Just a thought!
Owls That!
loads of players have come from non-league, nothing wrong with having a look around and seeing whats there.
Exactly Dezzy, he's a nippy little bugger too!
Owls That!
Charlie Austin case in point!
Owls That!
didnt we get grant holt from non-league? he's gone on to do ok. and that michael kightley at wolves too. Sure if we have a good think there is plenty more.
Okay Hirsty's Shinpads, fair enough point and think the point I was trying to get across was 'I just don't like the bloke' LOL
