Purse Leaves Owls By Mutual Consent

Wednesday captain Darren Purse has left the club by mutual consent and is expected to sign for npower Championship side Millwall.

The Owls have confirmed today on the official club website that the defender, who made 71 appearances for the club during his time at S6, has played his last game for the club.

The statement reads: 'Sheffield Wednesday can confirm that defender Darren Purse has left the club by mutual consent.'

It continued: 'Sheffield Wednesday would like to thank Darren for his services and wish him the best of luck for the future.'

Purse, who joined Wednesday on a free transfer in the summer of 2009 following a spell at Cardiff City, is expected to move to Millwall, who he supported as a boy.

Reports linked the experienced centre-back with a move to the London club today and it looks set to become a reality.

Thanks for the service you've given us DP but times are changing and this is better for everyone involved!
Yes i agree. Thanks Darren for all your work. A good leader but no future at S6 anymore. No doubt you will score against us as some point like all the other we let go.
Cheers Darren! Natural leader which cant be faulted! Millwall will be a good environment for him if yo know what I mean!!
Owls That!
Bye Darren, never been a big fan, but you did have theodd great game for us so hope all works out for you.
Nicky Weaver now for skipper until the end of the season?! Think Reda Johnson is primed for it in the future after already skippering Plymouth at times this season.
THANKS DARREN...... FOR LEAVING THE CLUB.very rarely a good performance but a good natural leader, all the best to him but now its time for reynolds, johnson and morrison to prove their worth
Think you done the right thing DP,and after saturdays performance and the booing you got i think you knew ya time was up.Cant fault u in every game cos you have done well in some games and scored a few goals for us and av been a gud leader u just dont have the legs for the challenge.Gudluk for ya future.
thanks christ, nice to see AI does take notice sometimes.
Well DP was never 'one of his own' so he was probably glad to get shot when the chance arose. Now let's find a CB pairing that really works out of Morrison, Johnson, Reynolds, Beevers or Buxton. I'd like to throw the name Hinds in there but nobody seems to care about him any longer!
to be fair, if his ability matched his attitude he would have been first class. hope one of the new lads now grabs the bull by the horns and leads from the back. really looking forward to watching the new lads develop.
I am sooo pleased. Great guy but for me he had a lot to do with us getting relegated. So many stupid fouls poor distribution. He defintaly had in his contract if fit he played he never got dropped!!! Thank god. Not keen on Hughes but need a cen mid and winger and I am very pleased. Bye Darren thanks but good riddance.
Whilst I'm glad DP has moved on his committment to the cause could never be faulted, players with greater ability didn't show the same level of committment he did which resulted in our relegation. I wish him well for the rest of his career and have no ill feeling towards him.
I should add 'you can't make a silk Purse out of a sow's ear' which means if something isn't very good to start with you can't do much to improve it, sort of sums him up to a certain extent!!
All the best DP! Didn't work out here but a great attitude and heart's in the right place.
bye bye darren, hopefully youll be playing when we next face milwall because you were terrible, no matter what anyone says.
For all you unbelievers who thought AI wouldn't drop him - there you go - not only he dropped him but he dropped him out of the club. Absolutely outstanding move by Irvine. Premiership in three years, guys, mark my words.
Disagree with you there random, don't want to be doom and gloom, but I think it's gonna take more than 3, I can't see us getting out of this league this season! Dropped too many points against the top 6, next season deffinately, but for now I'm happy with building a team for next season!
What I don't understand is why did he continue to play him, and then let him go, when we have other defenders like Hinds who he doesn't play but keeps? If you know what I mean!
This could be Irvines best transfer of the season,to get rid of him.Hes cost us big time recently.
leons gloves
I think 2 seasons
Radon Barrier
no real loss think he struggled at s6 good luck werever u end up dp
Well owl1, I think you can't just drop your captain without everyone's morale dropping significantly. AI was very unfortunate to inherit a situation like this and there isn't much to do really. Maybe the only think to do was to make Weaver captain after signing him and then play Purse less often since he's not captain. As for not getting out of the league this season OWL25, we're exactly halfway through, let's not be pessimistic, there's 23 games, 69 points to be taken. It's all a matter of training, training, training and getting the new signings get used to play together. UTO!
we can go up this season with alot of hard work and some luck with 3 points for a win we can soon be back in contention as for purse best for both parties that he moves on nice guy but to many mistakes this season he did some good with his charity work with the childrens hospital but was also charitable on the pitch .
beverley owl
lol charitable on the pitch good one beverley
I used to think Hinds did a decent job for us in the Championship and thought he'd have a little more game time in League One but what do I know?! I think that Purse must of had a clause in his contract that said that when he was fit, he played. Can't see any other reason why he played so regularly!
TheDon1974, im probably one of the few that would agree with you regarding hinds, dont think he did too badly for us at all.
