Wilko Steps Down From Owls Board

Wilko Steps Down From Owls Board

Howard Wilkinson has stepped down from his position on the club's board, it has been confirmed this afternoon.

Wilkinson has announced his departure on the official club website today, stating that his work in helping the club find a new owner, and see over their transition, has come to an end.

Wilkinson told the official SWFC website: "When I took on the role as chairman of Sheffield Wednesday in May 2010, I did so on the agreement and understanding that I would remain in the role only until we secured a buyer for the club and until the subsequent transmission of ownership had been effectively and smoothly completed.

"I now feel that we have achieved the twin objectives of finding a new owner and successfully managing that transition. I will of course continue to assist the club I have played for, managed, chaired and supported in its efforts to re-establish itself as a major player in English football."

The former Owls boss took the role of club chairman in May 2010 following the departure of Lee Strafford, but has always insisted that his stay at S6 would be a temporary one, in the board room at least.

His main aim was to help the club avoid administration and find a new buyer, which he did successfully alongside Nick Parker.

And following the sale of the club to Milan Mandaric last month, Wilkinson has decided the time is right to step down from his position on the board.

Wilkinson says he will still 'continue to assist' the club in any way he can, and Wilko will no doubt continue to attend matches at Hillsborough.

Fantastic manager for us in his day and all round top bloke! The stick that he personally endured throughout the takeover talk was not warranted and a weaker man would have just walked away sooner. I tip my hat to you Howard and wish you the very best in whatatever you do now.

I would imagine a statue of HW wouldn't be too much of a challenge to statue makers, his face and jaw line is quite angular!! Thanks HW for all your efforts and all the sleepless nights you must have had over the last year, despite copping some unwarranted abuse from the more moronic Wednesday following your hard work enabled the club to be saved, for that we should be forever grateful.
