Shortlist Narrowed For Owls Post

Wednesday chairman Milan Mandaric has revealed that he currently has a shortlist of four potential new managers following the sacking of Alan Irvine

Mandaric has moved quickly to try and get a replacement for the departing Irvine and could even have a new man in place before this Saturday's npower League One clash against MK Dons at Hillsborough.

It was announced that Irvine has left his post today following a meeting with Mandaric last night.

It's believed that the Owls chairman has already approached some managers who are currently in jobs to take the vacant position at S6.

Notts County boss Paul Ince is one name linked with a move to Wednesday.

Mandaric tried to get Ince as his manager at Leicester City before the former Manchester United player was offered the chance to manage in the Barclays Premier League with Blackburn Rovers.

Gary Megson, who was manager of the Foxes before leaving for Bolton Wanderers, is also being mentioned as Irvine's possible replacement.

Rob Kelly and Billy Barr have been put in temporary control of first team affairs at the club.

Well I reckon you could throw a hat over all four candidates (of the names mentioned) and pick any because there are no 'stand-out' candidates. Maybe MM is going to surprise us with big name capture?!

No Keane or Megson and i will be reasonably happy with most we have been linked with.....Ive developed a weird obsession with keegan, after that id take coppell, both experienced and play good football.

Let's hope so Don. MM took Harry Redknapp to Portsmouth after Harry had done a stand up job at West Ham and been forced out prematurely. Perhaps MM should look to the ranks of managers currently without a club? O'Neil, Allardyce, Keane, Megson etc rather than Ince (though I admit Notts County played well against Man City).

One of the out of work managers with experience would be the best bet. Though I hope it's not Keane or Megson. Mandaric might surprise us by bringing in a big name like O'Neill or someone relatively unknown. My four would be O'Neill, Worthington, Curbishley and Allardyce. Though if we can't get any of those then Ince might be worth a go.

O'Neill would be ideal to not only get us up but in the long run to take us and Mandaric where we want to go... But would he come here, can we bring him in? If so, then do all it takes Mandaric, if not then it's hard to see who else can take us there in the long run. So maybe someone like Ince might be worth a try, though as I said we probably need experience ideally.

can't see o'neill coming to S6 - i think the shouts of experience and inspiration is the way to go - so for me I agree with Dezzy P - i'd like to see keegan and a new 4-2-4 formation!

Wilko and Big Ron were among our best ever managers. I see a bit of them in O'Neill and Big Sam. Worth try in getting them. If we can't get them but what's to say we can't! Mandaric has a vision of getting us back to the Prem in the long run. Someone like O'Neill or Big Sam would in the long run would be ideal and capable of doing that. If we can't get them then Worthington or Ince might be worth a go.

I think we'd all like a manager like O'Neill or big Sam but even though MM clearly has some influence, I think the expectations are going a little too far. We are still a League 1 club, like it or not, and we have no guarantee at this stage of being anything else next season. I think a name like Keegan, Coppell or Curbishley maybe within reach.

taken from gary johnsons wiki page: After gaining a knighthood in the new years honours, Sir Johnson is now in line to takeover the vacant job at the champions league bothering side Sheffield Wednesday. His wage bill will include free prawn cocktail crisps from the nearby home bargains, and a managers tracksuit sponsorship from one of the ducks that frequents Hillsborough park pond. bfl is that your work?

The only manager worthy of matching MM's ambition is O'Neill but that is not going to happen? All the other managers, with possibly the exception of Coppell, are no better than Irvine in my opinion? They might start off well but this time next year we'd probably be in the same position with an Ince, Megson, Dowie, Johnson etc? I fancy an unknown from Europe or something? Someone who doesnt quite understand the history of Wednesday and would just come in 'and do the job'! Tricky one but I trust MM! If he can Sven to Leicster........

Right here's my no way go near. Roy Keane, Paul Ince, Iain Dowie [awful suggestion] Blackwell, Allerdyce, Strachan oh and that Alan Irvine. I think Gary Johnson is a decent manager and would motivate a team he did wonders at Bristol City difficult for him at Posh as their chairman is a complete you know what. I'd take Gary Megson not sure why but think he d a job for us. John Sheridan is a good shout. We need someone who can motivate the squad make them believe again I am not concerned playing great footie but winning games and stop boring the team with watching films of teams who are s***e and worrying about their threats and actually concentrate on what we could do. Martin O Neil would be amazing not going happen. If it was me Id give Big Ron a ring and tell him get upto Hillsborough and sort these lot out as he got all the above credentials.

It's quite sad that a dyed in the wool Wednesdayite like Megson just doesn't get the supporters fired with enthusiasm. Is it a good thing that if he gets the job, I'll feel a bit underwhelmed? For me O'Neil is the ideal but it would take a great deal of persuasion on Milan's part. After that Allardyce as we won't play attractive football but we will win and he will sort the defence. To those who point out that we're a Third Division club (League One is just a marketing ploy) I'll say this; We're a Premier League Club temporarily adrift in the Third division, we are debt free, have a chairman willing to invest (within reason), have a squad with some potential, have a (for the division) high regular attendance but this is way down on what it has and should be (reasons being price, recession and team performance), we are the very definition of a sleeping giant. We're Sheffield f***ing Wednesday and the right man can become a legend! How many third division clubs can offer that scenario?

BFL my deluded glasses will always be blue and white and it's the combination of our past and our potential future that will attract the right manager. Wednesday no longer have to struggle with crippling debt and high expectations. Now it's just the high expectations which is no different from any big club (you might have to look that one up in an encyclopedia). So it just depends on how MM wants to do things. Does he try for a big name and liift the club with the risk of a backlash if the club underperforms or does he pick someone who underwhelms the supporters in order to lower expectations but risks a backlash should things not go well? Personally I've had enough of managers who have shown promise in the lower leagues as well as ex-players who I hate to see fail. Gimme someone who'll excite the club and put a bit of fire in our bellies about something other than how bad the manager is. AI has gone, the old board have gone, the debts have gone, it's time to turn the corner. Oh and BFL if my optimism bothers you, good ;o)
