'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Megson's three and a half year plan.

Gary Megson has been appointed the new manager of Sheffield Wednesday on a three and a half year contract.

The first task for Megson will be tomorrow's game against MK Dons and the Owls will have to put a run together to get back into the promotion mix-up.

A terrible start to 2011 has seen Wednesday fall far behind the leading pack and ultimately cost Alan Irvine his job.

Promotion is what Wednesday fans desire and if Megson can deliver that this season he'll win over the Owls faithful.

Chairman Milan Mandaric wants the club to be in the Premier League as soon as possible and this length of contract gives Megson considerable time to achieve that.

Megson has already won promotion to the Premier League twice as West Brom boss and his last managerial role was in the top flight with Bolton Wanderers.

Is this the right appointment for the Owls? Has Mandaric moved too quickly to replace Irvine? Are you happy with a former player returning to manage the club?

You cant question his desire, as he is a fan, but am worried about what the the style of football is going to be like?

Welcome Gary, now prove your worth
Hereford Owl
sorry to say i`m a bit dubious about this, I would love to be wrong but another ex player in charge remember turner hope i`m wrong
Owlet
surprised that we have given him such a big contract big if he can deliver than am not bothered the club needs stability interesting that he'll be in charge 2mora hope he picks the right team
retfordowl1867
Turner has never achieved anything as a manager though Owlet, at least Megson has some Championship success! Whatever happens we must not expect instant success because although we have a good squad of players, he needs to assess eveyone!

GARY MEGSON'S BARMY ARMY!

Spot on Don! Under 24hrs isn't long to work before the first game. I hear what you're saying owl1, and I agree that attacking, entertaining football is what I want to see (well, hear). MM was asked this in an interview yesterday and he basically said style is great... but winning is what matters. I know the two are connected, but if Megson can get them winning consistently and out of this division, whether they be attacking, defensive, or hopping in potato sacks... I'll be as pleased as punch!
Colorado Owl
Colorado Owl, if we get out of this league hopping in potato sacks then Megson will be the all new 'special one'
TheDon1974
I think, if it was going to be an ex-player, then Megson is the best available. I like Sheridan, but he doesn't have the level of experience required yet. In our situation, a win is the important thing and if that means it comes at the expense of attractive, free-flowing football, so be it. We all know our squad have the talent and the only thing missing is someone to get them fired up and working as a team - in that respect Megson is the man and we all need to get behind him and the team for the rest of the season's push back up the table!!!
US OWL
Oh Dear,God help you, you`re gonna need it. Be prepared for boring 0-0 nils if your lucky, going home frustrated and being slagged off as "pathetic".You will never see attacking football again. As a first rate club you have appointed a fifth rate manager. Good luck from a Bolton fan who experienced the worst manager since watching the Wanderers from 1955.

He's my 1st choice can't believe wednesdayites thought oneil and big sam, however I am concerned about megsons boring football tatics, but for the next two seasons I'm happy to take 3 points and play boring football, but think if we do get into the premier league he'll have to go or change the way he manages the game, because if you look at boring teams with no flare like Birmingham west ham wigan etc look where they are and look at Bolton now! They were boring with megson and now there playing with flair and look at em

Good luck Gary for the rest of the season
spall001
If you heard the interview on P&G, he addressed any concerns about playing style. The guys a winner, get behind him
brandyman
Good appt I think! Can we be picky over our style of play! If he gets us back in the mix I don't care! 1-0 nil in our favour for the rest of the season will do me!

To be fair Megson kept bolton wanderers in the premier league despite the style of football he played. i along with every other wednesdayite wants to see good football but id rather have 3points everyweek and scrap a result than losses and draws playing good football. And as far as turner is concerned , megson is not turner.forget about turner he's the past. lets get behind megson and move forward ! :D
SWFC_LUKE
Well i will just wait and see if all of you that are pleased with this appointment will be singing his praises in months to come,i so hope ur for our clubs sake and that i get to eat humble pie.Hope he proves me wrong only time will tell.
ollyowl70
We need to support the new manager, whoever it turned out to be! If not then we are partly to blame for any poor performances that happen. Players thrive on support and it gives them that extra bit of adrenaline and confidence at times. As soon as we give them the opportunity for their head to go down then expect the performances to drop!
TheDon1974
Wasn't sure when I first heard the rumours but the more I think about it, the better I feel. He did well at WBA and the problems he had at Bolton with the fans hopefully won't happen here.
ModgeOwl
I liked the interview on radio Sheffield with Paul Walker, i suggest all Wednesday fans listen to it, one of the best interviews i've ever heard, about the time he was W.B.A manager, and they were playing Wednesday and we scored and he jumped up, think he's going to be a cracking manager for us, because he's Wednesday through and through.

It's a completely new era now with pretty much a top to bottom clear-out!

I don't give a monkeys. I think this is an excellent appointment and let's get behind him and most important the team from this point on wards. There will more downs but hopefully a few more ups and I've already put a sneaky bet on us promotion each way before he just got appointed.
jamesc1905
Reading on Owls forums I cant believe that some of our so called fans are already slaggin Megson off. The mans not even had a day at the club. Ive read the amount of slander I will call it he got and still is from stupid Bolton fans. If there are owls fans out there who are reading this and slaggin him off already do us a favour and shut the hell up your a disgrace to our club. Look at its this was, everything they..... (well we) have been moaning about for the last 20 years has gone, The Board, The Debt, The Chairmen, The Manager even The Team Captain Darren Purse. In my eyes its a new era and theres sod all to m...oan about. Most teams will be looking at us green with envy, not naming any names.....cough"Sheffield United"cough and many others. Its a brand new era a new beggining. Its what we have wanted for years, we should wake up this morning feeling proud to be a wednesdayite, excited for our future not losing sleep trying to think of who or what we can slag off next. I know Im a true blue cos Im (In the words of Dean Short) Like a kid at Christmas this morning. If you dont feel this way you really aught to be questioning your loyalties. UP THE OWLS !!
stevetheowl
Well said Steve and some people just aren't happy if they're moaning or rubbing someone up the wrong way!
TheDon1974
ecco spot on. Unfortunately I think most of the comments we are all reading must be from closet Grunters who have infiltrated our site like Handsworth Bell**d
Tentown-Owl
Good luck to you all. http://blogs.soccernet.com/boltonwanderers/archives/2011/02/guess_whos_back.php
Pedro1874
Interesting read Pedro but reading that just makes me even more excited we got Megson. For once a manager with some balls. Ok a bit of arrogance in there but I think its needed we have lacked some fire in the dressing room for years. You only need to look at Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, arrogant, quite open to say my team are the best and brag about his achievemets. Its much better than a man who cant even name his best squad when asked. I respect that some of the things Megson said to the Bolton fans they may not forgive but is that cause to keep slaggin him of a year and a half later. We had the same with Dave Allen calling us all Complete Crettins but we aint still going on Chesterfield forums and slaggin the guy off. In my eyes Megson did a great job at Bolton the fans just didnt appreciate and connect with him and he basically got peeed of and spoke his mind. Who wouldnt !
stevetheowl
Stevetheowl i'm with you mate, got up this morning thinking it was christmas, new start, Strafford gone Irvine gone wednesdayite and the 10% gone, it's like a dream come true, i just know Gary Megson is gonna be good for us, i can just feel it in my bones. UTO - WTID - FTB
ecco owl
Absolutely over the moon:- Gary knows what it is like to get promoted-- just watch us go now -- Good Luck Gary and THANK YOU MILAN
owlinwales
Lets give him totally the opposite sort of welcome he received at Bolton, one he won't forget in a hurry! Good luck today Gary and the team.
tarnyowl
Its interesting to hear all the comments from the Bolton fans, especially the one who has been watching them since 1955 and Megson was the worst ever manager. I lived in Bolton from 1992-1994, i lived in Burnden next to the ground. They were in division 3 and a quarter of the ground was a supermarket. They would have given their right arm to be managed in the top flight by anyone in an half full fancy new ground. Although initially underwhelmed by the appointment, i too now have a sense of optimism. Unlike Bolton I don't have to go back 20 years for the bad times - 3 months is enough. MM knows what he is doing. Meggo is an Owl and he has a fiery temperament - I suppose there has to be some advantage to being ginger - UTO!!!
Radon Barrier
well said steve the owls can't believe so called fans have written him off before he stepped through the door this guy is a fan the same as us lets get behind him and the team and see where it takes us hopefully the campionship.
beverley owl
Alot of work to be done and why oh why can we never beat 10/9 men.
ollyowl70
I want to see a settled team with a regular striking partnership up front....a regular back four with a midfiled hungry to collect and take it forward....UTO
sandy15
Megson has been there and done it and it is not like the other options were mourinho and ferguson. We need to get behind him and give him the opportunity to succeed - the early days at Bolton he saved them from relegation and frankly in the lower levels of the premier league most teams play turgid football as the fear of relegation is so high. Frankly i don't care if we win every game 1-0 and play crap just nicking a late goal - it is about winning now by hook or by crook. You don't style points you get points for winning and that is all that matters!
