Owls Step Up Stopper Loan Search

Wednesday boss Gary Megson will step up his search to bring a goalkeeper on loan to Hillsborough this week following an injury to Nicky Weaver.

Weaver, Wednesday's regular number one, missing the trip to Southampton at the weekend, with the inexperienced Richard O'Donnell taking over in goal, and is set to miss the rest of the season with a groin injury.

The injury blow means Megson will look to bring in an emergency loan signing and not risk using the inexperience of O'Donnell, despite a good performance at St Mary's, as the Owls look to avoid relegation from npower League One.

Megson will hope to have someone in for Wednesday's next game at Dagenham & Redbridge next Saturday and will have no shortage in cash to get his man.

It could be a tricky process though, with teams keen to keep their squads at full strength as the season reaches its 'business' end.

Keep checking Vital Wednesday for any transfer rumours and done deals.

think o'donnell deserved another go to be honest, thought it did ok. wouldnt mind trying to get turner back from everton, he really impressed last time he came to ours and i dont think he's had much game time for anybody since he left.
DEZZYP
Lets bring Chris Woods or Kevin Pressman back,y not Arsenals done it lol
ollyowl70
Think Turner is at PNE on loan DEZZY? agree about O'Donnell though, could've been more on Saturday if it wasn't for him! He's young, energetic and has the desire! In this last five or ten years how many academy players have actually gone on to nailed down first team regulars? Beevers, Spur and Wood are all I can think of? Which is pretty poor when you think about it!
Owls That!
Would much rather have a new midfielder, O'Donnell looked decent can't take that away.
SheffWed93
Yeah Dezzy, Turner has been at PNE for about a month now. Well it looks like Weaver may be out for the remainder of the season and Jameson has pelvic issues so whatever happens we need another keeper in. O'Donnell did well but we're at the business end of the season now!
TheDon1974
I agree TheDon, ROD certainly did well and deserves credit but wins are what we need now. I'd like to see an experienced, safe keeper between the sticks and not just punt with youth again. I hear that Birmingham don't need Maik Taylor - would surely be a strong signing? Any other ideas guys?

i thought o'donnell had a decent game and i'd give him a go, how else do you get more experience unless you play? yeah i know he could go out on loan but he has done that so why not throw him in. i always liked maik taylor but isn't he getting on a bit now?
Hirsty's Shinpads
Only ones I can think of are Maik Taylor, Ross Turnbull, David Stockdale, Brad Jones, Tim Krul, Stipe Pletikosa, Mike Pollitt and Carl Ikeme. They are all 2nd and 3rd choice Premier League keepers and if we don't go for one of these then we may as well stick with O'Donnell.
TheDon1974
"Business end of the season" I would understand if we needed a goalkeeper to be heading into the play-offs. But we're not... Would much rather have a bit more in midfield. O'Donnell should get a chance despite being inexperienced. Experience this season has proved to mean nothing, for example Miller, C.Morrison, J.Johnson, Purse and even O'Connor.
SheffWed93
O'donnell did really well but we have to bring someone in... whether we continue to play him or not. If anything happens to him we have a 17 year old called Cuff and with the run in we are facing that's just to much of a risk

Like SW93 says, experience has counted for $hit all this season so why not give him ago? His eagerness and desire to impress will more than make up for his inexperience! If inexperience is such a big issue, why was he experienced enough to play Sat (and have a cracking game!) against the biggest club in the division, but not now? I know it was forced but what more does a player have to do nowadays to come through to the first team? He's 22, not exactly a kid! Plus, he was 8ollocking players much older and "experienced" than him so obviously isn't short of confidence is he? Out of the keepers The Don says id probably take Turnbull or Krul (I live in Newcastle so see alot of him and he's handy! Literally!) Unless Shay Given fancies a run out!? I appreciate we do need cover so i'm not saying don't bring a keeper in, i'm just merely pointing out that O'Donnell, under the circumstances, deserves the chance to play again against D&R!
Owls That!
I once played in the net for the Acorn Academicals when our keeper didn't turn up. We won and neither of their goals were my fault, although the ball did slip through my fingers and hit me in the face once. I don't mind stepping in but i can't do midweek games.
Radon Barrier
just a thought but with weaver's injury and fact he out of contract mean has he played his last game for the club ? We have two good young keepers why not stick with o'donnell and make him and jameson 1st and 2nd choice as from next season ?
retfordowl1867
i'd sign weaver up for another year for certain, its too risky having two young keepers as our no1 and 2, besides, isnt it more than likely that weaver will be our player of the year? who would have thought our keeper would be player of the year at the beginning of the season. id certainly leave o'donnell in for the remainder of the season though.
DEZZYP
I with ya DEZZYP Weaver has too much to offer to cut him loose, the season may have already been over without him and we need out and out Wednesday passion in the squad if not on the pitch. (Weaver has that in spades) At least one more season so the young keepers have a great keeper to learn as much as they can from. I thought when we lost Grant we'd be in trouble but it appears we have a healthy blend of talent and experience in the Goal tend position. As is for 2011-2012 in regards to the Keeper position I hope. (Just whole-sale changes infront of them)
