O'Brien Set For Owls Loan Return

Bolton Wanderers midfielder Joey O'Brien is set for a return to Hillsborough on loan until the end of the season, according to reports today.

O'Brien pulled out of the clash between Bolton Reserves and Bury Reserves last night and The Bolton News is reporting that the 25-year-old is set to move on loan to Wednesday before Thursday's deadline.

The Irishman is desperate for first-team football and Owls boss Gary Megson knows the qualities O'Brien has to bolster a Wednesday side that is struggling at the wrong end of npower League One.

O'Brien has not featured for Bolton's first team since October 2008 and he's out of contract at The Reebok Stadium at the end of the current campaign.

Wednesdayites have fond memories of O'Brien following a successful loan spell in the 2004-05 campaign, where he started 15 times and helped the Owls to promotion the same season.

He can play at full-back but is more likely to be played in midfield, a role he played during his last stint in the blue and white stripes.

And the move could be made permanent in the summer, with O'Brien likely to be released at the end of his contract with the Lancashire club.

would be a great addition
fozzyp
hope he can recapture some old form, promising also that he is out of contract too in the summer.

Does anyone think we have a chance of keeping Issaih?! I hope we land O'brien especially if he wants to move in the summer means he'll have something to prove.

I'd like to think we can keep Isaiah. Out of contract at Villa in the summer and can't see him getting a new deal there
welshyowl
id very much like to keep Isiah, been very impressed with what iv seen so far. him and o'brien would make a much better midfield partnership than the rubbish we have had to endure so far this season.
DEZZYP
I've been proper impressed with him to... seems like a class act and strong in all areas! It's nice to have seen a proper midfield player this season. Ok he's made some mistakes but at least he's shown the desire over and over to make right. Hope we can keep him think he'll just get stronger and stronger. I have to admit have only been a fully fledged owl for the last four and half seasons after re-locating up north and re-discovering my passion for the game as part of the faithful, this means I haven't seen O'Brien in a Wednesday shirt so don't really know what he offers?? However I'm hopeful he can add something we are sadly lacking. I have only seen the Wednesday in decline with Managers and a players struggling to make an impact. I hope that we have reached our lowest point and that it's time to be "great" once more, there are many examples of clubs that have rebuilt in the way we need to and I hope more than anything it's time for us to show we can do it to! I was impressed with O'Brien after his last stint with us and my only concern would be his susceptibility to injury. If Megson continues to favour one up top then I'd be quite happy to see Osbourne and O'Brien in CM with another attack minded player between them and probably Madine.
TheDon1974
if we stick to 4-5-1.... definately for me id like to see madine on his own up top with possibly palmer/coke,osbourne and o'brien... and then bring in some quality at the end of this season. o'donnell has to be better than every second string keeper outside of the prem surely so we hopefully this new keeper we are bringing in must be good. megson will do well here UTO!
SWFC_LUKE
Happy with this! O'Brien, Osbourne, these are the kind of payers we need to be looking at getting permanently to get anywhere under Manadric's vision! Not quite good enough for the premiership but bang on at Championship/League One level!
Owls That!
quality addition he was awesome last time he was here would defo make him and osbourne permanant signings
retfordowl1867
if he's fit and ready then it would be a great signing-summer clearout with o'connor, potter, johnson and sedgewick (PLEASE). Then snap up osbourne and o'brien and put them in with coke (who is central mid not left mid mr megson),jones, palmer, nyroni would keep miller and teale.should give us plenty of young legs to help with protecting defence and helping madine in attack.I am certain megson will go down the 4-5-1 route next season.

It says on talksport and a few other sites we will have the option of a permanent deal at the end of the season, it make have took about 5 years longer than we had hoped but looks like he could finally be a permanent fixture at our club......goodbye potter and o'connor (hopefully).
DEZZYP
Great signing, and I agree that we need to get rid of the deadwood like Potter and Johnson, but James O'Connor has been incredibly good to our club and gives the passion we all crave so badly. Joey O'Brien's quality though - keep 'em there Meggo!

Potter and O'Connor are at the top of my list for exit in the summer they alone have driven me to drink repeatedly. My list is a long one for those that need to go... the keepers however are Weaver, Spurr, Beavers, Miller, Coke, Palmer, Heffers and Madine. Loan players; Issaih we need to keep and I'll hold off to see Jones and Batth play a couple more times. As for the rest there are good players amongst them but I wouldn't mind them moving on with the dross. But before all of this I just hope if they want to keep their shirts they show how they want to stay in the Leauge.

Going off topic, did Megson used to manage Lee Hughes at WBA? Hope that doesn't crop up again in the summer!
Owls That!
great signing if it happens, just the kind of player we need, still young and hungry for first team football, reminds me of the days of whealn, brunt and simek and they didnt turn out to bad!!

As a Bolton supporter who was desperate to see the back of Gary Megson, I am interested to know how he has been received by Owls fans (given that he supports the same club as you). Are you positive about him?
