Mellor Keen For Permanent Owls Stay

Mellor Keen For Permanent Owls Stay

Wednesday striker Neil Mellor has told boss Gary Megson that he's keen to stay at Hillsborough after his season-long loan comes to an end.

Mellor, on loan from Preston North End, netted a brace to help the Owls to their first home win in npower League One of 2011 with a 2-1 win over Colchester United.

The former Liverpool youngster has struggled to cement a regular place in the Owls first team following the appointment of Gary Megson as manager.

But he hopes his performance on Saturday will help strengthen his chances of being a key figure for Wednesday between now and the end of the season - and help strengthen his chances of a permanent deal.

'I've been in to see the manager. I told him that although I'm on loan I'm keen to stay,' he told

'I wanted him to know I was disappointed.

'Hopefully, after today it will put me in his good thoughts for the remainder of the season.'

Mellor is the top-scorer at Wednesday this season but the 28-year-old has struggled to remain a first-team regular throughout the campaign.

He's deemed surplus to requirements at parent club Preston and his future could well depend on how well he performs between now and the end of the season for Megson.

Well he better do alot more than score two goals in one game.

I know he's our top scorer but I'm not totally convinced, especially with the cash we can now spend with Mandaric. Seems to play really well for a couple of games then is non-existent for others.

a decent player and an honest player too. I like him, I think he's pretty good for this level. But then, I liked Luke Varney and got slammed for that. I think if we played Mellor regularly he'd have a decent goalscoring record for us.

If we created more chances for him he would bag a shed loads, the simple truth is our creativty is nearly non-excistent. If he played upfront for peterborough christ knows how many goals he would get. im not judging any of our strikers goals ratio's this season, if they dont get chances they wont score.

Agreed Dezzy, no chances no chances no goals. He had 13 of them goals in half a season were we were fairly consistent and most of us were hoping we signed him in January. Unfortunately I doubt we'll sign him.

has had his critics this season but he has bagged 16 goals so maybe he worth a deal ? I think morrison and heff will be on there way in the summer so would only leave madine think if he performs we'll sign him

Play the guy up front with a second striker and ensure the service is there and Mellor will score loads of goals, especially in League1. Stick him up front on his own and just pump long balls at him with no support and you may as well not select him! It is in the latter circumstances that he has not seemed to perform!

All comes down to how we play next season if it's with two properly up top then I think keeping him is a good plan if the money is right! Heff, Maddine and Mellor are a good trio. I think a true pace striker is the addition required to have a quartett that can play against any type of defense. Strikers in most cases are only as good as the service they get. The service also needs to be suitable to the style of striker(s) you have on the pitch. Morrison would be the one to leave for me... I think get the style and quality of service right to the other three and watch the goals fly in! UTO

My only concern is the math when talking strikers... GOOD + FAST = expensive (even for MM!!) I think we may have to find the next best thing... that doesn't mean another "has been" that means scouting for a "yet to be!!" WTID
