JJ to be offered new Owls deal

Wednesday boss Gary Megson has confirmed he'll offer Owls wing wizard Jermaine Johnson a new contract this summer.

The Jamaican's contract expires at the end of the current campaign but, with questions being raised as to who Megson will keep and let go this summer, Johnson is the first the Owls boss has confirmed he'd like to stay at Hillsborough.

Megson said: 'There are things in his game you can't improve - ie, his running with the ball, his pace, his quality - but he very rarely finishes a game, because of tiredness, and away from home his performances haven`t been up to what's required to enable us to get results.

'So I have spoken to Jermaine. His contract is coming to an end. He will be offered a contract and we'll see where we go from there.'

The 30-year-old started in yesterday's 3-1 victory over Swindon Town and is one of a number of players who will see their current contracts come to an end following this season.

Ther are things in his game you CAN improve - the end product. Some kind of test is in order, Gary - JJ crossing to a striker's head, hitting shots on target, that kinda thing.

waste of a shirt! to inconsistent in my opinion? very rarely finishes a game...away performances arent what they should does that warrant a contract extension? would rather have someone who can finish games, plays 100% home and away, can cross, actually hit the target consistently etc etc, you know, the things professional footballers should be doing! I'm a 30 year old winger, probably wouldn't be able to finish a game becasue i'd be knackered and 1 shot out of 100 would fly in all the time! If I turn up at Hillsbrough does that mean ill get a contract!! Brighton went up as quick as they did and as well as they did because they had quality in EVERY position! If you have that, there's no need for players to carry other players! If players aren't carrying other players it means they're concentrating on their job and their job alone so focusing 100% on the task in hand! So, to sum up, no thanks!

Of course, our dear manager hasn't said what kind of contract JJ will be offered ;)

I'm with you Owls That, he is class on his day (or 20 min spells) but these are too infrequent and it's pointless if he's not going to play the majority of the away games where you need everyone to dig in. Potter will be given a new contract now to come on and replace JJ on the wing when he's knackered :)

To be honest, I am his worst critic ever. I think he is Lazy and not a team player. However, that said, when he does run at players and his head is on the game, he is exiting to watch. Good point made above. If he gets squad players wages and MM is happy to pay out modest sums, then keep him.

I agree with what has been said above we need class in every position if we want to get on, improve and win eventual promotion. I think an extension is in order however for JJ because of what he can do not focussing on the negatives... I see him as the short spell player next season. If you need to change the game in the second half of a match and strike fear in to the team you are playing then a fresh legged JJ coming off the bench is something a lot of clubs in our leauge would kill for. That being said I don't think most clubs would pay for such a Luxury, that is what JJ represents but a lot of truly inspirational and addored players have been the same way over the years. 20 minutes is enough for JJ to completely change a game, how many players have we had at the club who have been the same way but moved onto bigger, brighter and better things?! How many other players do we have on the books at the moment that can "on their day" effect a game as much?! Yes he's frustrating but if he can stay fit, and improve in a few key areas he's better than what we could afford to buy even with MM's money. Pace, intelligence, finishing, pin point crosses and running at speed with the ball past people is what every club wants on the wing but how many haven't found anyone close?? There is always compromises to be made. WTID

Pessimism? He's outstanding, and in a team that should be at the top he'll shine. So happy we are trying to keep him. He's a match winner and has pace. Its Teale and Sedgwick we should be looking to put on transfer list, JJ may be inconsistent but when are the Teale or Sedge ever consistent? Teale tries to much to be skillful and messes up and Sedgwick can't beat a player and when he does the delivery is never there. The players we should be looking to get rid of are the ones who are under contract, Teale, Sedgewick, D Jones, Potter, also don't know what's going to happen with M Morrison and M Reynolds?

Spot on fed-up and 4eva. If he's on squad wages and is being used as a 20min, great. But I just don't see him as a starter. Great to watch when he's on, but that inconsistency hasn't changed in the past three years, and I don't see it changing now... although I'd like to be proven wrong! Who are the better wingers out there that'll be in the open market this summer?

Clearly he's hit and miss but I feel that, even if he doesn't start every game, he's an incredibly handy player to have in the team. His end product may not be great but his sheer pace causes problems for other defences, so I think we should give him another year, see what he can do.

Offer him a week-by-week contract and after every game the fans get to choose how much he gets paid for that performance. Anything else then no thanks. We cant afford any slip ups next year.

Well worth a 1 year deal, mainly as an impact player off the bench now, get his pace running at tired defenders in the last 20. To be fair, he still has the odd good game though can have us pulling our hair out at times.

prob worth another year but he'll never change, will still be as frustrating as ever next season going from the sublime to the ridiculous and back again, assuming he accepts any new contract offered, he may decline and leave if the terms are reduced!

what about trying to convert him to a striker?? i know hes a had a few games there in the past and he frightens defenders to bits

I think JJ scares defenders because hes unpredictable but I think thats because most of the time he doesn't even know what hes doing. I am just not a fan of his at all. He runs fast but has no control or end product. I think he is massively overrated because every now and again something he does comes off. He has no consistency at all and I would chose a reliable bod with less intended skill than him any day of the week. So far, he can't even be consistent in league 1. I'd keep him in this league, if the wages are low, but he would more as cover or bring him on from time to time in the hope he can produce something lucky. Otherwise, I'd happily see him go because I think it says it all about where this club is now that we hold a player like him up as some kind of major talent.

we need to clear out the crap average inconsistent players that we have to build a solid team capable of winning promotion. I am all for having luxury players who are capable of changing a game they haven't been involved in - you need those. JJ is not one of them
