Mellor named Owls Player of the Year

Wednesday striker Neil Mellor has been named as the club's player of the year.

Mellor, who is on a season-long loan at Hillsborough from Preston North End, is the club's leading scorer this season with 20 goals to his name in all competitions.

And he's been rewarded for his good form, in somewhat of a season to forget for Wednesday, by receiving the player of the year gong.

Mellor enjoyed a good first half of the season in the blue and white stripes, but it was perhaps his form over the last month, which saw him net six goals after being recalled into the team, that won him the award.

The vote took place via the club's official website and Mellor grabbed over 30 per cent of the votes.

'It always means a lot to win awards like these but when they come from the supporters who watch you every week, it means that much more. I'd like to thank everyone who voted for me,' Mellor told the official SWFC website.

Mellor edged goalkeeper Nicky Weaver, who received 26 per cent of the votes, and Tommy Miller, who scooped 10 per cent of the votes.

No arguments here, no other names jump out.

Have to agree no complaints here he's been instrumental in critical parts to our season... I'd put the legend between the sticks a close second! Bizzarely think the spell he had as Captain was his least affective phase to the season. (Well other than when he was out with injury.) After Weaver I'd probably say Miller, but no issues with Mellor as number 1 for me Think it's a shame if Preston take him back being he's had a season of experience in the leauge they now find themselves in. Would like him to stay... then again you can't have everything you want.

Would love to know who is on this Six man shopping list of Megson's?! Hopefully he's identified the true needs of squad with the time he's had to appraise what he has. I think the list will swell anyways I'd be surprised if less than 8 players come in during the summer.

Fully deserved, personally for Weaver but fair play to Mellor can't say he doesn't deserve it.

I think they maybe a good chance of getting Mellor next season 4evaOWL, if Preston were struggling to pay his wages this season, i'm sure it's going to be even harder next year, and now we've got a sugardaddy we must be favorites if G.M wants him.

MM said 5 of the 6 players were new players, not currently at the club, which suggests our loan players are not included in the 6 on the shopping list. (from Q&A session tonite)

Megson says he wants a squad of 20 + 3 keepers. So for him to bring in 6 in the summer,we need to offload quite a few who are still under contract.Who is going to take them off us?That will be the problem, likes of Reynolds,M Morrison,Teale and Sedgewick to name only a few.

The player they plan to keep is clearly Mellor. Not to bothered about the otherloanees such as Batth (Nothing special) R Jones (Few alright games but not too convincing to get promotion with) O'Brien (1 game wonder).

Hopefully Reda Johnson and Chris Sedgwick have caught the eye of Tony Adams with their performances this season and he fancies bringing them in on big money for his Azerbaijan mob. On a serious note, we massively need to keep hold of Mellor and invest our money sensibly this summer. We never seem to go for the players the fans want to see in the Blue & White - lets hope Megson gets it right and more importantly, does it early enough for us to hit the ground running next season.
