Speculation starts as duo are linked

It's going to be a long summer of speculation at Sheffield Wednesday, with the rumours already setting their wheels in motion less than a week after the end of the season.

It's the same for all clubs over the summer months, but Wednesdayites could grow tired of the speculation sooner than most, with Owls boss Gary Megson already revealing that he's after nine players to bolster his squad, and chairman Milan Mandaric giving him the funds to do so.

A few names have been doing the rounds for some weeks now, but two to make it into the press today are that of former Sheffield United centre-back Claude Davis and Macedonian defender Vance Sikov.

Davis is out-of-contract with Crystal Palace and will be available on a free transfer, with skysports.com linking the big centre-back with a move back to the Steel City.

Sikov is relatively unknown, but a Cypriot newspaper has reported that Megson is travelling over to Cyprus to see the defender in action after watching his progress on DVDs.

But despite the stories emerging today, the Owls boss has already poured cold water over them in a roundabout way. He told the Sheffield Star that all nine of the targets on his wishlist are British players, hence ruling out Davis, a Jamaican international, and Macedonian Sikov.

Of course, it doesn't mean Megson isn't interested in the duo, but if the Owls boss is true to his word, then they won't be on the list of nine players that he's handed to Mandaric. They could be back-ups, or, like many stories we'll hear this summer, they could well be rumour and nothing more.

Decent player at Championship level. Not to interested in the Macadonian lad. Thought they were all British?

I think we need to go with Megson on this one and take his word that these players aren't on his list.

I doubt these are true but I don't think we can discount players just because we've never heard of them? Eastern Europe is a hot bed of talent at the minute remember! How many WBA probably did the same thing when they bought in Zoltan Gera and Robert Koren and other clubs who have bought similar players? I'm sure this Sikov guy probably won't come but he is a full international and whilst yes it is only with Macedonia he will be used to big game atmosphere's! Something a lot of Wednesday players lack nowadays! Davis can **** off, never rated him anyway let alone the fact he's a blunt! I'm just saying don't discount every player we'll be linked too because we haven't heard of them! We don't have the scouting network of a professional club!

That's fair enough Owls That but if you'd read the article on Sikov it actually said he was a big unit and a bit slow and gets caught out by quicker players. It puts you off him as you're reading it!

As a midfielder I would say that is 95% of most CB's! If you were blessed with huge pace and athletic build you wouldn't be a CB would you?! If Megson is going all the way to Cyprus he must be with a look? Like you say, trust Megson on it! Your words!

There's no doubt about the Claude Davis transfer - he's just moved into our street, and will be officially unveiled very soon...!
