Speculation starts as duo are linked
It's going to be a long summer of speculation at Sheffield Wednesday, with the rumours already setting their wheels in motion less than a week after the end of the season.
It's the same for all clubs over the summer months, but Wednesdayites could grow tired of the speculation sooner than most, with Owls boss Gary Megson already revealing that he's after nine players to bolster his squad, and chairman Milan Mandaric giving him the funds to do so.
A few names have been doing the rounds for some weeks now, but two to make it into the press today are that of former Sheffield United centre-back Claude Davis and Macedonian defender Vance Sikov.
Davis is out-of-contract with Crystal Palace and will be available on a free transfer, with skysports.com linking the big centre-back with a move back to the Steel City.
Sikov is relatively unknown, but a Cypriot newspaper has reported that Megson is travelling over to Cyprus to see the defender in action after watching his progress on DVDs.
But despite the stories emerging today, the Owls boss has already poured cold water over them in a roundabout way. He told the Sheffield Star that all nine of the targets on his wishlist are British players, hence ruling out Davis, a Jamaican international, and Macedonian Sikov.
Of course, it doesn't mean Megson isn't interested in the duo, but if the Owls boss is true to his word, then they won't be on the list of nine players that he's handed to Mandaric. They could be back-ups, or, like many stories we'll hear this summer, they could well be rumour and nothing more.
