Owls forced to wait on Batth

Wednesday will have to be patient in their chase to sign defender Danny Batth on loan from Wolves for the new season.

The young centre-back is understood to be high on Gary Megson's list of transfer targets this summer but Wolves boss Mick McCarthy won't be letting any of the Molineux club's young stars leave in a hurry.

Batth impressed on-loan at S6 last season and he, as well as a number of Wolves' loan stars from last season, will start pre-season training with the Barclays Premier League club before a decision is made on his immediate future.

McCarthy said: 'A lot of our younger lads are wanted on loan but no decisions on any of them going out will be made until they have been back for a while. Then we`ll decide if, when and where they`re going to go.

'Players like Scott Malone, Danny Batth, David Davis, Sam Winnall and Nat Mendez-Laing all did well for their respective teams after they were loaned out last season, and interest in them is already high.'

The Owls could face competition for Batth's signature, but they'll have the edge in negotiations thanks to his time spent in the blue and white last season.

The youngster formed a good partnership alongside Rob Jones, who has signed on a permanent basis for the Owls, in the heart of the Wednesday defence last term, and enjoyed his time at the club.

he'll go to a Championship side on loan next season. we can write this one off. is anyone else as frustrated as me about the lack of drive and urgency that's seemingly going on at Hillsborough. I know MM and GM will be working behind the scenes and SWFC are in a far more stable place right now than in the past (albeit in league 1) but I really thought this summer would be when it all kicked off for us. it just seems we're being too sluggish- we're going to miss out on Neil Mellor - we missed out on Danny Green, I can't see us bagging Semedo now, Jason Koumas (who I'd love us to sign) will probably end up in the Championship also...
Carbone's Padawan
Think we are suffering because we are trying to attract out of contract players so not to pay out transfer fee's... I suppose the idea is we can get better players this way spending the money on wages. The problem with this stratergy is that these players are also attractive to loads of other clubs, this means it's a case of trying to persuade these players they want to play for Wednesday. The experience and talent we need though will be looking for their best offer and that's rarely going to be us unfortunately. Need some players with the vision of Wednesday can be in the near future and the desire to be part of it!! Unfortunately these may not be the players we want. I'm frustrated and concerned but I really hope that now it's July the out of contract players will be available and we can sign half a dozen!! Really wished we'd got Green and Mellor but the fact we aren't willing to give into player demands (Well in the case of Mellor anyway) gives me faith in the future stability of the club. Need a big signing soon though to show there is desire as well as caution. UTO

The biggest problem with trying to sign out of contract players is that there is usually a reason they are out of contract........because they wasnt good enough to be offered a new one.
DEZZYP
Exactly, well said DezzyP.Thats what happened to us last summer isnt it.Signing out of contract players that were not good enough. We had no choice then with the mess we were in,but I am also getting frustrated at the lack of signings. At least Megson is clearing players out to make way for the new arrivals(Charlton have now signed 9 new players).

Not too fussed about the Batth situation and think that is one position where we have adequate cover with everyone having a good pre-season behind them. I agree we've cleared the decks but we desperately need some energy in the new arrivals.
TheMightyBoosh
Agree with TheMightyBoosh to an extent. Jones was the more important of the 2 at the back and beevers was finally starting to look the part towards the end of the season before injury. The experience of Jones at the back was vital. I would still like to see a few more leave to clear out all the deadwood but iv been reasonably happy with the one's gm's released. I personally would have added JOC, both morrisons and sedgwick to the release list.
