Owls target linked with Championship

Wednesday will face some stiff competition for in-demand striker Neil Mellor, with a trio of Championship sides linked with his services.

Doncaster Rovers, Southampton and Watford have all been linked with the former Owls loanee today.

Mellor, who excelled during a season-long loan at Hillsborough from Preston last season, is on Gary Megson's hitlist for new signings at S6 this summer.

Wednesday were expected to make a move for the former Liverpool striker in the close season but contrasting reports about his future have put a possible return to S6 in doubt.

Interest from the Championship could see Mellor opt for a move there, although his season-long stint with the Owls last term will be an advantage for Wednesday.

Brighton and Hove Albion, promoted to the Championship last term, were linked with the hitman towards the end of last season but interest has cooled, especially given the Seagulls' capture of Craig Mackail-Smith.

Time to move, its dragged on for too long. Hope GM has new targets in mind.

Whilst I don't hold it against any player wanting to play in a higher division like The Championship, did Mellor not come to us on loan in the first place because he wasn't good enough anymore to play for Preston? Who play in The Championship! Just saying!!!
Owls That!
A-L-F is probably only on about 2-3k a week at Rotherham so why doesn't MM forget about paying 10k a week to Mellor and stump up the asking price for A-L-F and pay him 5k a week job done everyones happy( in theory )

im with you wedalways, go for someone cheap who has raw potential, you look at peterborough they got boyd CMS and mclean from knowhere and they came good, alot of players who excel in league 1 are braught in from league 2 or the conference. Take a punt with ALF or even donaldson from crewe
smiggyswfc
smiggy good shout with Donaldson just not certain Madine (if he is not banged up) would work well with him as they are both players that like the ball in the air and play for flick ons which ALF would thrive on. as cover for madine would be a usefull addition though but as always Meggo's shout
wedalways
Think Donaldson has signed for Brentford.Cant believe that no one has been linked with Le Fondre,he must be worth a gamble in our league.

would like mellor back end of day he still scored 20 last year whatever people say about him give the lad what he wants before we get stuck with 2nd rate strikers morrison being a prime example
retfordowl1867
still think we could spend £10k a week more wisely than on one player even though he did a decent job for us last year - 2 pacey wingers on 5k a week would please me more
wedalways
I'd like to see ALF in the blue and white stripes. I recon he would rise to the challenge and enjoy performing in front of larger crowds than he will ever expect to witness with the small club he is with now

Mellor's career is close to ending. I think he did a great job on loan last term, but it's time to stop speculating and ALF is the answer.
Kettering OWL 1963
My mate is the captain at Shrewsbury and he joined them from Rotherham where he was captain all season when they lost out to D&R in the play off final. He was named in the League 2 team of the year with ALF the same season he banged in 30 goals! Needless to say when I asked him about this he said he would ***** league 1 quite comfortably!

le fondre wasn't good enough to get picked for rotherham towards the end of last season
Hirsty's Shinpads
would like us to sign mellor and Le Fondre and get i have a hunch morrison may do a bit better this season
SGoodwin94
Am i the only person who would be mortified by paying a fee for Le Fondre? Surely we have higher standards than that.
DEZZYP
who would you go for dezzy?? i personally think le fondre would bang goals in all season. hes a finisher and if we can sign players who will give him chances, hell do awesome. still though, id prefer mellor and le fondre up top. mellor got 20 in a p155 poor team and didnt even play all the time, surely hed get more next term in (hopefully) a much better team
smiggyswfc
Considered we paid fee's for Morrison, Reynolds et al a fee for Le Fondre would not be the end of the world. Like Smiggy says, he is a finisher and that is what we've been missing for the last 8 years plus since we had Kenwyne Jones and Steve MacLean! I dont see him as a bad signing at all?
Owls That!
Mellor doesn't care about Wednesday and was quoted last week saying that all this speculation is confusing him - muppet!
TheDon1974
i have a feeling morrison will do better this next season if we still have him. le fondre and morrison are similar in that they are both finishers and are reliant on service. last year we produced very little so its not a fair reflection. mellor offers a bit more versatility but he was either very hot or very cold with little in between. also we never had a settled front two so we never got a partnership working which is pretty important when trying to be consistent. whatever happens i hope megson decides who his favoured pair are and sticks with them

If that was a post on Facebook Hirsty I would 'Like' it and 'Retweet' it on Twitter!
