Dyer deal in doubt for Wednesday

Wednesday's quest to sign Leicester City winger Lloyd Dyer is under threat after an unnamed Championship club entered the race for his services.

Owls chairman Milan Mandaric and vice chairman Paul Aldridge have been working hard to seal a deal for the former MK Dons man and it's understood Dyer was all-set to become an Owl before interest from a higher level.

Mandaric has been using his ties with his former club to his advantage since arriving at S6 - defender Michael Morrison has also made the switch to Hillsborough from the King Power Stadium - and it's understood that he was confident of completing a deal for the 28-year-old, possibly today.

But all that's been thrown into doubt following the interest from the Championship club.

Dyer is high on Gary Megson's wishlist this summer and the Owls will continue to talk with Dyer in the hope that he'll choose Hillsborough as his destination this summer. The Owls can certainly compete wage-wise, even with clubs in the Championship, and Wednesdayites will be hoping the Milan factor will pay off.

If not, Wednesday will have to swiftly turn their attentions elsewhere, with Brentford's Myles Weston a possible option. The Owls were linked with the left-winger in the last transfer window and could make a move for him again if the Dyer deal proves unsuccessful. Derby County's Lee Croft has also been linked with a move to S6.

can we really compete wage-wise with championship clubs?

Simple answer - NO

I think we could compete the question is should we?? It'll probably have us deep in debt in a few seasons time unless our fortunes dramatically change. I'd rather we build progressively and within our means than go mental and get punished. Having said that I would like for this deal to get done... I'd really like to see two wingers signed and two strikers in the next week if the quality is out there and available. Think that's all that is needed now to give us a very good squad. Wonder if Megson is wondering about blooding Oliver this season up front?!

While he would be a great signing I would rather have people fully committed to us rather than committed to the wages we can pay.

While Mandaric prefers free transfers to spending cash to buy players he certainly has the clout to offer high wages because of this. We'l certainly be getting close if not matching and even bettering some clubs in the Championship for that I am certain.

You can understand a professional football player wanting to earn as much as they can. It is after all is said and done a very short career. But i would love to see Loyd Dyer wearing blue and white next season
