Addicks give the lowdown on Jose

Wednesday made Jose Semedo their fourth summer signing this week - and we get the lowdown on the former Sporting Lisbon man from Vital Charlton writer Chris...

'Semedo, oo, oo, oo, Semedo, oo, oo, oo, he comes from Portugal, he f***ing hates Millwall.......' is the little ditty that Wednesday fans will here when they visit The Valley in September. One of Charlton's most popular players of the post Premier League era, Semedo is assured of a warm welcome when he returns to his former home.

Pardew signed him in the summer of 2007 following Charlton's relegation from the Premier League. A central defender by trade, Pardew pushed Semedo into the holding midfield role as he believed it would be difficult for a foriegn player to slot into central defence in the Championship.

Jose is a whole hearted, if limited, player. He will get his tackles in, pass accurately over a short distance but will add little going forward, as his record of 2 goals in 152 appearances in all competitions testifies. Charlton's 4-4-2 formation is not ideal for him, Semedo looks far more comfortable when used as an anchor in a five man midfield.

He never gives less than 100% and it is this enthusiasm that endeared him to the Charlton fans. Since the club's relegation from the top-flight, they have continued to finish in a lower position than the previous season, with many players seemingly not bothered. Jose was a noteable exception.

Personally, I would still play him in defence but as a defensive shield in a five man midfield, he has few peers at this level. The switch to Hillsborough will be seamless, he has a brother and sister who live in Sheffield and is a warm, easy going guy who will give his all for the Owls.

Just one thing, you need to dream up a new song for him!

Vital Wednesday would like to thank Chris, and Vital Charlton, for letting us know what to expect from Jose at Hillsborough next season. Maybe we'll be repaying the favour with Michael Morrison...

Sounds like just the type of player we're looking for

Who's Ian Pardew? :)

a think he is a good signing. who cares about long range passing ability? this is where we go wrong anyway, we should stick to short passes and moving into space. that way we keep possession of the ball, even if we don't do much with it the other team has to run about trying to get it back and eventually we will create space for a chance. i saw something about Xavi at Barcelona who has the highest pass completion rate in the world but they are all short passes which is the way they play, now i'm not suggesting we are barcelona but the model is pretty simple and can be achieved at any level with lesser players. don't give the ball away

should be a good signing. someone who'll give 100% to the cause no matter what.
