Owls held to draw in opening friendly

Wednesday were held to a stalemate in their opening friendly of the 2011-12 close season when they drew 0-0 with Russian side FC Volga Novgorod.

The Owls enjoyed a good workout against decent opposition to get their friendly fixtures underway on Tuesday and Owls boss Gary Megson made full use of his squad.

Three of Wednesday's summer recruits got their first outings in an Owls top, with Julian Bennett, David Prutton and Jose Semedo making their debuts.

Megson fielded a strong side against a Russian team that is midway through its campaign in the top flight of Russian football and currently enjoying a mid-season break.

The Owls competed well, and Megson made five changes at half-time to allow a number of first team players a run-out.

Owls: O'Donnell (Weaver 46), Otsemobor, Reda Johnson, Beevers, Bennett (Reynolds 46), Jermaine Johnson, Prutton (O'Connor 46), Semedo, Sedgwick (Palmer 46), Daniel Jones, Madine (Morrison 46)

FC Volga: Abayeb, Grigalava, Buivolov, Belozyorov, Salukvadze, Adzhindzhil (Khojava 76), Crosas, Tursunov, Jose (Nikita 62), Vatsadze, Ahmetovic (Khazov 68)

Not a bad result against a top flight team, who's season is in full swing.

bit of a nothing feel about it but O'Donnell played a blinding first half according to the match reports and Pruttons commitment to the cause there for all to see from the off. by all account good job well done

Defensively sound and hopefully the pre-season friendlies will show to GM where he needs to strengthen.

Did we play 8 - 1 - 1 we so need another few strikers and wingers.

looks like JJ lasted 90 mins. Guessin we were playin 4-5-1. I am hoping Reynolds, Jones and Reda have all been kept because Gary sees something in them. Jones and Reda have the raw attributes from what I have seen and Reynolds sounded like a hot prospect. I am hoping people are willing to forget player's performances from last season and give them a chance to prove themselves this season. On the negative side I can't really see what O'Connor and Sedgewick offer other than hard work but that makes them at least reliable for the squad

Rob Jones had a neck injury so wasnt risked.According to reports we didnt have one attempt on goal which doesnt sound good. But at least we kept a clean sheet.
