Time for Owls to step it up against Leeds
Tomorrow's friendly clash against Leeds United at Hillsborough represents the first match that Gary Megson will expect a performance from his men.
The Owls have had four friendly matches this summer so far - against FC Volga Novgorod, Worksop Town, Rotherham United and Stocksbridge Park Steels - but all will have been used to get match fitness back up following the summer break.
Megson won't have been expecting sparkling performances from his new-look squad - although granted they would have been a welcome bonus - in those four games.
He will be from Saturday's visit to S6 of Simon Grayson's men though as the big kick-off edges ever nearer.
Wednesday's first team squad are likely to play three more friendlies before the kick-off on August 6 against Rochdale - against Leeds, Barnsley next Tuesday and Premier League side Stoke City on Saturday week.
That means Megson will want to edge closer to knowing what his first eleven will be for the first match of the season, as well as working on set pieces and defensive and attacking positioning.
It won't just be a case of getting match fitness levels up anymore.
The result still won't be important, but a good performance will be against what will undoubtedly be tough opposition.
The Owls boss, and Wednesdayites, will still be keen for more new faces to come into the squad before the big kick-off, but Saturday's starting line-up could go a long way to showing what it will be for the season opener.
Add to the mix that it's going to be a tasty Yorkshire derby, with a decent crowd for a pre-season friendly, and we've got a pretty good match on our hands this weekend.
