Barnsley ease by lacklustre Owls

An understrength Wednesday side was comfortably put to the sword by local rivals Barnsley in a pre-season friendly clash at Oakwell on Tuesday night.

Goals from David Perkins and Jim O'Brien gave the Reds a 2-0 victory in what was a comfortable night against a much-changed Owls side.

There were wholesale changes to the Wednesday side that drew 1-1 against Leeds United at Hillsborough on Saturday.

The Tykes bossed the contest throughout and the loss will give Owls boss Gary Megson plenty to ponder with just ten days to go before the start of the new Football League season.

Barnsley came flying out of the traps and Nathan Doyle and Craig Davies both came close to opening the scoring before Perkins beat Nicky Weaver in the Owls goal on eight minutes to give the hosts the lead.

Wednesday struggled to get into the game and although they showed slight signs of improvement in the second half, the Reds always looked more likely to grab the next goal and they did with ten minutes to go through O'Brien.

Owls: Weaver (O'Donnell 64), Tumulty, R Johnson (R Jones 70), Beevers, D Jones, Palmer (Reynolds 72), O'Connor, Semedo (Nyoni 79), J Johnson, Madine, Amond (Sedgwick 46).

Barnsley: Steele (Preece 36), Wiseman, Foster (Lovre 81), Edwards, McEveley, Addison, Butterfield (O'Brien 41), Doyle, Perkins, Davies (Vas Te 64), Haynes (McNulty 68). Sub not used: Hassell.

It's clear where we are lacking and I think everybody knows it. I just hope that WHEN the new strikers and wingers are brought in that they are worth the wait!

the fact that jj was our best player in anyones view is a worrying thought for me!! get the players in and quick otherwise the start of the season is going to be a mess

Glad we all being positive already. To be honest Mandaric needs stump up more cash for a proven goal scorer a decent winger and dare I say it a more creative cen mid. Unless he wants zero return on his business. UTO

it all depends on the type of player megson wants though. no point in mandaric buying a creative centre midfielder cos megson won't pick him unless he can also run 20 miles each game and defend!

Shall we not be a bit more positive? Personally I won't hear a bad word about Mandaric because if he hadn't come in and saved us we wouldn't have had a club. When Megson took over we could have been heading for relegation, I doubt that would have happened but he has strengthened in the right areas and got rid of a lot of crap players. We haven't had the luck we wanted in the transfer market but the season hasn't started yet. The players we have signed strengthen the squad and will play for the shirt. I can't be the only one who is happy with things since the takeover can I?

Who's Tumulty????????????????????
27/07/2011 01:20:00
no i'm happy Devon was just thinking that players like JJ and Sedgwick shouldn't be first team starters and definately not arguably our best players?? i'm sure we will start strengthening our attacking options soon and all of Meggo's signings i have been impressed with. Olly tumulty is a youth product been with our youth system for a couple of years now

I think the bottom line is that with MM and GM at the helm (and I am delighted to have secured both), it should really be obvious that we are in desperate need of a 20 goal a season striker and a bit of creativity from midfield, either on the wings or in the centre. On a side, I am thoroughly disheartened (and this isn't a new thing with Wednesday) that our interest in a player becomes public almost from the off, it would be nice if we made a move before Championship clubs were alerted!

Rant over - Devon_Owl - thoroughly agree, I can't remember a season when there wasn't off the field dilemnas clouding our pre-season. I'm based in London, so can't wait for Charlton away in September!
