Megson says no to Amond deal

Trialist Padraig Amond has left Hillsborough after failing to impress Owls boss Gary Megson enough to earn a contract at the club.

The Irish striker has played in four friendly matches for the Owls since arriving at the club last Tuesday on trial.

Megson had revealed following Saturday's 1-1 draw with Leeds United that he'd like to keep the former Shamrock Rovers man for another week to assess his qualities.

But following last night's defeat at Oakwell Megson has decided not to offer him a deal to stay at the club.

'It was difficult; he was chucked in against a decent side,' he told the Sheffield Star.

'We won't be offering him anything. He is a great lad and I hope somebody else will give him the opportunity.

'I have to do what is right for the club. We are going to bring players in, in that (forward) position but they have to be the right ones.'

NO GOALS IN 4 NOT A SUPRISE FOR ME THAT NO DEAL WILL BE DONE. AGREED THAT LAST NIGHT WOULD HAVE BEEN DIFFICULT TO GET ANY CHANCES OR MAKE AN IMPRESSION AND ALSO THE LEEDS GAME BUT STOCKSBRIDGE NO OFFENCE INTENDED AREN'T SETTING THE WORLD ON FIRE AND THE ROTHERHAM GAME. NOT SAYING HES A BAD PLAYER BUT HE HAS THE SAME GOAL TALLY PRE SEASON AS CLINTON!!!

At this rate we need 3 new ones with Clinton not even being on the bench for the last 2 matches. Either he's not fit or has spat his dummy out!

Think we look good in terms of keepers, defenders and for the first time in years good in CM!!! A really solid and compact basis for a team and a MASSIVE change from last year! If we can add pace and ability wide i.e. Roberts and perhaps Weston and someone with pace, power and goals up top to compliment Madine i.e O'Grady and maybe one other striker I think we'd be a lock for top spot and we'd have the beginnings of a good Championship side for 2012/13!!!!!!!!! I have faith in MM and GM however with so many poor players removed from the wage bill and some very good signing secured for no fee surely its time MM secured the funds to take us to teh next level

According to the Ginger Mo' he's looking at 2 prem players (strikers i think,) one a fringe player and one on loan. BUUUTTTTT there's other clubs and we're only Div One etc etc - so fingers crossed - Rochdale say no O'grady exit iminnent.

You get the impression that MM is forcing GM into the loan market because it was only last week that GM was quoted as saying he's not keen on loan signings!

Short term loan signings will not get us promotion and thats a fact. Its looking like a mid table finish again, unless GM can get us 2 quality strikers and a decent winger quickly. Very happy with the defence but whos going to get us the goals?

I think we should avoid getting all critical and down about where we're gonna finish before the season has even started. I'd rather wait for a striker that might actually be useful than just grab someone because the season is about to start. All the same it is obvious that we can't leave it too long, particularly as Morrison is unlikely to get any useful amount of goals, if he even plays, and JJ is JJ, even if he plays up front.

GM has made the right choice here. I think Madine and JJ are going to have good seasons for us but we will struggle to replace Mellor and a promotion-winning side needs a 20 goal a season striker. Although we are grateful for him essentially saving us, we all (me included) want MM to dig deep and stump up the cash for a decent striker. It's the difference between going up and mid table mediocrity (Rhodes, Lambert, Mackail-Smith, Murray).
