Owls' Premier push for players

Wednesday boss Gary Megson is understood to be turning his attentions to two Premier League 'fringe players' with time running out on a deal for long-term interest Neil Mellor.

Megson is desperate to bolster his attacking options ahead of the new npower League One season and has been chasing the services of Neil Mellor throughout the summer.

But with no clear end to discussions with the former Owls loanee in sight, the Wednesday boss could be forced to turn his attentions elsewhere.

The Owls have also had a bid for Rochdale striker Chris O'Grady turned down, although they could return to Spotlands with an improved offer for the former Leicester City hitman.

And Megson may now look to the loan market to bring in a new striker ahead of the big kick-off on Saturday, August 6.

Norwich City striker Cody McDonald and West Brom hitman Chris Wood are two names that have been linked with a move to Hillsborough this week.

McDonald, 25, is surplus to requirements at Carrow Road following the Canaries' promotion and City have made him available for transfer.

McDonald knows the lower leagues well after hitting 25 goals for Gillingham in League Two last term and he's keen for regular first team football next term, whether that be a permanent move away from Carrow Road or a loan deal.

Wood, a New Zealand international, had experience of League One football last term thanks to a six-month loan stint in helping Brighton to promotion.

Megson could look to either, or both players to boost his attacking options for the new season.

And with the new season moving ever closer, the Owls boss will keen to wrap-up a deal sooner rather than later - so keep your eyes on Vital Sheffield Wednesday for all the latest transfer news.

Mc Donald sounds a regular scorer. Anybody know anymore about him?

Shows what a clue Megson has that it takes for O'Grady to turn us down before we then decide to then go for a young prospect, league 1 winner, World Cup experience, and Premier League experience.

Norwich value him at 550,000 so that should rule us out straight away.

If we get both of these plus a decent winger and maybe a player maker think we will be promotion contenders, we have been linked with some decent players but as yet we havent bought any it, come on get it done, only a week to go....

Interesting that numbers 8,9 and 10 have been unallocated as yet. Would be nice if Mellor was 10, O'Grady 9, Koumas 8. Now that's wishful thinking!!!

What makes McDonald a premiership player anyway. Has he played in the prem or is he a league 1 player. Played in league 2 last year so 550k sounds ridiculous to me!

Then and again he/Mc Donald could be the answer to our prayers. I DID SAY MAYBE. Also it would have to be for the right money

he is worth 300,000 at best, norwich are being proper greedy they just want as much money as they can so that when they go straight back down they dont get massive debts.

I've said since the end of last season that McDonald was the guy to buy! Hopefully we could stagger his 500k+ fee based on promotion i.e. 300k up front and the rest if we go up or on appearances. I saw him a couple of times last season and would say he offers a little more class than ALF. I'd like to see 8. Gary Robers, 9. Cody McDonald and 10. Chris Wood/Chris O'Grady to fill in those shirt numbers. Madine may not be first choice if his squad number is anything to go by but realistically he still needs to prove himself still.

Madine wanted number #14. He asked for it, I think he is going to have a good year. also excited about the McDonald/Wood prospect, particularly wood, we know he is a handfull in this league from his time at Brighton and he has already played in the prem and in a World cup (NZ obviously not a force, but still impressive) at 19. had enough of hanging around for Mellor, get these 2 in sharpish and Roberts and I will feel alot more comfortable heading to Aug 6. On another note, got the new home shirt (sponsor free!) and it seems to run a good bit smaller than their size dont they?? I cant take mine back, Im in North Carolina!

Either we should dig deep, pay the money and get someone from an higher division or have a punt on a striker from a lower league. ALF fits that remit and has proved he can score a goal or two.

31/07/2011 07:03:00

Just watched a You Tube clip on ALF and while they sugar coat things he did look like he could find the net. Of his 50 goals only 12-13 are penalties and most are him being the first to re bounds or first to react in the box.The last fox in the box type of striker we had was Maclean. Surely he would be hungry for success and willing to move up. I dont know what his general play is like but surely the instinct wont be lost by moving up just one division and a hard working team could form a platform for him to thrive.

McDonald is a fantastic striker very quick in and inhind the defences. I'd be happy with Le Fondre because the lad knows how to finish and you can't really argue with that because he's proven where ever he has been he'll score. Chris Wood is a big physical striker who is probably going to be more of a target man than a goal scorer which I think we already have in Madine, but I would still be very happy with us signing. McDonald and Le Fondre are also very good ages and if Rotherham only want 250,000-500,000 then I think that is a bargain for someone with 106 League goals at 24.

Based on what I've read in the past day or two we have more likelihood of getting Le Fondre than we do McDonald. He'll know he was 2nd choice after McDonald though (3rd choice if you include Mellor!)

Prediction: Megson will be looking for another job within 6 weeks of the new season. He's the reason Wednesday can't sign decent strikers or creative players and Mandy is prob starting to realise it. No creative player wants to play for a Manager who has only one ugly. It might be good enough in a relegation scrap but at the start of a new season no half decent player wants to sign up for that.

Megson out your wrong on 3 counts, 1 he won't be looking for a job after 6 weeks, 2 clubs are asking too much for players, Gary's spot on with that and 3 your not a Wednesday fan your a r sole. Now lets see who's right.
