Owls look to match Le Fondre valuation

Wednesday are expected to return to Rotherham United with a new and improved bid for star striker Adam Le Fondre this week.

Owls boss Gary Megson turned his attentions to the 24-year-old Millers man last week to bolster his squad's firepower but saw an initial bid, understood to be 200,000, turned down by the League Two side.

Rotherham chairman Tony Stewart said the bid 'was not worth taking seriously' and Wednesday may have to match the Millers' valuation of at least half a million for Le Fondre's services.

The Owls are leaving a late to add a new striker to their squad with the big kick-off just days away.

Wednesday have already seen a bid for Rochdale hitman Chris O'Grady turned down and are understood to be out of the running for Norwich City's out-of-favour striker Cody McDonald.

Now Le Fondre, who bagged 24 goals for the Millers last term, is the main target ahead of Saturday's opener at home against Rochdale.

Time for us to go in hard or move on! We're not going to get anyone in before the end of Aug with a proven track record at this rate!
TheDon1974
At last the possibility of someone who will be hungry to prove himself and a good track record. Please stump up the cash and lets move forward.
AuzzieOwl
Radio Leicester last night had Sven saying they are interested in singing Alf but wouldn't do anything until after their Carling Cup clash with them next week. The plot thickens!
TheMightyBoosh
We do look short of fire power at the mo.
robc
really hope we can pull this off crying out for a striker come on mm get the cash out
retfordowl1867
106 goals in 253 league appearances speaks for itself!
TheDon1974
Mellor and Miller were our top scorers last seasons, where are the goals going to come from unless we bring in at least 2 strikers which will cost money??
sussexowl
TheMightyBoosh....leicster are trying to get a deal with shane long at the moment so if they get him they wont be bothered...also are you sure he hasnt got higher targets considering there loaded and are looking for promotion this season and if theyre going for promotion there not gonna want a striker that isnt even proven at league 1 level?
SGoodwin94
I can't believe we've left it so late. So little time for anyone to settle in. Or are these shock tac-tics for us/the fans, any player who joins us and our opposition. To me all this should have been sorted out weeks ago.

Patience young Jedis :-) The transfer market has been very slow and the dominoes are still falling. M and M will be looking to get the best possible bang for their buck and that means we might not get someone until after the start of the season. I watched the Leeds game start to finish last night and thought the new signings were all very good additions to the team. I'm happy to wait if it means we get the quality we need, not just the quantity as per last season....
SeattleOWL
SGoodwin it sounds like Leicester have been priced out of a move for Long and believe he'll got to the Premier League. I'm only going by what Sven said so don't shoot the messenger! SeattleOWL I agree that we shouldn't rush unnecessarily but there is not much quality out there right now that would fall in our budget so we have to be swift in that respect.
TheMightyBoosh
TheMightyBoosh...all im saying is that leicster are going all out for promotion this season and are spending a fortune doing it...so i dont think they are going to try that hard for Le Fondre after all they could buy 12 Le Fondre's for the price of Long!!
SGoodwin94
I totally agree with you SGoodwin94 and just hope they're not THAT interested in Alf!
TheMightyBoosh
Have viewed the comments over the last few weeks with interest, albeit without any interest in making a comment. However, having seen Wednesday twice pre-season, against Leeds & Stoke, it is blatently obvious that they need at least 2 strikers, and in that I mean a big target man and a proven goalscorer to play off him. There is not a cat in hells chance of being anywhere near the summit of the table with what Megson has available. And for all the rumblings and this and that in the press, it is obvious also that the fans (less than 4000 v Stoke) and about the same number plus the Leeds fans the week before, wont waste any more money than they have to watching freindlies. Come on Milan, back him with some cash.

We need to go hard or go home now! It's catch 22 with ALF becasue if we go up the price paid will be seen as an excellent investment but if we don't everyone will moan and blah blah blah same old same old!! Football is all about taking certain risks at certain times and I think this is def a risk, becasue it is a risk, that we need to take to take us from play off contenders to league winners!
Owls That!
Why would anyone call us playoff contenders? On paper we actually have a lot less quality than we did at this time last year. We need a couple of decent strikers to make us playoff contenders not league winners
fed_up_owl
Well for a start we have midfield and a defence that can tackle this season so just on that alone I would put us down as play off contenders as that's what cost us last season! Leaking goals, not scoring them! I agree we need a couple more strikers though, that is pretty obvious to all and everyone! On paper id say we have alot more quality than we did last season tbh? We've also had a decent-ish pre season unlike last seasons pre-season so hopefully there is a bit of confidence knocking about for Saturday!

Sign him up! great source of goals, we need to get a player like this, and they dont come cheap unfortunately, if we want to go up, we have to face it we're gonna have to spend.
wrighty-swfc
Putting aside the recent 14-0 drubbing, do we have any decent youth prospects in the Striker department?
SeattleOWL
They say that the bookies are never wrong skybet gives wednesday 4/5 and Rochdale at 3/1. but interestingly our strikers madone & moanrrison 5/1 each to score the first goal - Giles Cokes only 9/!
Prendergast
I hope we get him, but 500K is very expensive for someone who's only proven in league 1. I think we'll get him, but it'll probably be for about 250-300K.
S12 OWL
who did we lose 14-0 to? i saw one of the young players twitter status' and it didnt sound to good
wrighty-swfc
Alfreton Town I think Wrighty? Good experience for the youngsters, I got beat 13-0 the other night so technically im better then sheffield wednesday!! Nice to know!
Owls That!
