The Wednesday Way

The Wednesday Way

Last season we were everyone's team to beat. Let's all have a great time at Hillsborough, one of the biggest stadiums (and crowds) some of the players had seen. Everyone wanted to beat us on their patch, and humiliate us on our own.

Now in our second season down in the depths of the third tier, this stint at least, I'm hoping that most of the teams will have got used to us. Not so shiny, not so new, just another third division club.

Other teams can be forgiven for thinking like that. The way last season ended, and our overall finishing position, hardly had us shining out as a beacon of footballing prowess. I am hoping they are used to us for one simple reason.

It's the Wednesday way.

We were one of the favourites for promotion, or even the league title last season. I've never seen Wednesday perform to the best of our abilities when we're the scalp, the favourite. We always seem to do better as underdogs.

Pundits can predict what they like; we all know they're hardly ever right. I`m hoping the other clubs in this league, their fans and their management, will be concentrating on the likes of Charlton, Huddersfield, Preston, and dare I say it, Sheffield United.

Gary Megson has cleared out many of Irvine`s signings, leaving room to add some of his own. The likes of Jose Semedo and David Prutton give us both attacking flair and hard work in the middle of the park. Plus it was nice to get one over Charlton! Signing Rob Jones permanently and bringing Danny Batth back, until January at least, makes us much more solid at the back too.

The only problem we seem to have is goals, or lack of them. The strikers we currently have are: Clinton Morrison and Gary Madine. That's it. No offence to either of them, but we're not going to win the league with 2 forwards on the books. Madine has shown promise so far, and I'm hoping against hope it comes together for Clinton this time out. But neither of them have shown that clinical nature, that cutting edge, that something extra any club needs to get promoted.

And that`s not even taking into account the wings. With JJ out for probably a month already, we have no pace out wide. There were times last season when Teale was our only attacking outlet (when JJ was unsurprisingly side-lined through injury). He's gone and we're left with Sedgwick, I think even he would admit he`s not one of the fastest players on the pitch.

So where does this leave us? So far we look tough to beat, solid, but lacking firepower and pace. It seems to have been the case for...well for as long as I've been watching Wednesday anyway! Maybe it's because we hero worship the excellent (David Hirst) and vilify the lazy (Leon Clarke). Maybe it's just a simple case of money, strikers always demand higher transfer fees and higher wages. Whatever the reason, we haven't been able to permanently attract an out and out goal scorer to S6 for quite a number of years.

I hope Megson's got something up his sleeve. I hope it's all a ruse, that this was Meggos' plan all along and he's just waiting for the right time to make an offer. Come on Gary; let`s show this division what we're about. And another Sheffield Double wouldn't go amiss either.

Nice article Nick! I'm well up for this season. Impressed with the 5 signings and the removal of Potter and Teale. People will probably disagree with me highlighting this player but D.Jones does offer pace and a decent left foot. Sedgewick has looked good pre-season and it will be nice to see Palmer get some game time. Things are different with a solid defence, it takes pressure off the players further up the pitch and a lot of this will be achieved through the Semedo signing. It is definitely a worry about the strikers though. Shame nothing has come through the academy. What happened to Vadaine Oliver?

Yep, good article Nic. I agree with you in some respects about Daniel Jones and think it would be nice for the manager to tell him what position he sees as his best so he could train accordingly. Megson waxed lyrical about Palmer last season so hope he gets more game time - albeit it probably in an unfamiliar wing position. I dont' think we can rely on the academy for anyone to shine through this current season. I think Semedo is vital in front of the back four and will be a big favourite with the fans!

Not sure what happened last season. We seemed to have a half decent side with xmas approaching, MM rolled in and cleared our debts and gave Irvine the funds to push for promotion. Then it all went tits up! By the time Meggo arrived relegation looked more likely, bizarre though it seems (still). Whatever's gone on between then and now it all starts on Saturday and I have to believe the pair of them know what they're doing. I liked Megson as a player, particularly during his first stint with us under Big Jack. He has a good CV, okay he wasn't popular with the fans at Bolton but he didn't let anyone down either. He shows commitment and I think he has enough professional pride coupled with Wednesday's interests at heart to make his time with us a success. So let's can the negativity and get behind whoever is selected to wear the shirt. That's it. Now you can shoot me down in flames.

Very realistic and sensible comments OurMaurice. It's somethign we're not always used to on here! Last season is in the past and if we look at our squad now it has better quality in it but is just short in a couple of areas. It's a shame but the season isn't won and lost in the first couple of weeks. If we haven't got 2 strikers and 1 winger in by the end of August then we can rightly kick off. At the moment it's pent up frustration that is getting to everyone. If we win 1 or 2 nil on Saturday I'm sure the feeling will change!

Thanks for those kind words TheDon1974, feels like being accepted into the fold, you know? So... anyone remember Steve Downes or what?

If you believe the reports OllyOwl70 the 2nd bid was £250,000 and Rotherham were right to reject it! Anytime Maurice and I think Downes was just before my time! Any good?

We definitely should not panic until the transfer window closes, it's a long long season and even if we do get the strikers in I expect under Megson the strategy will be win 1 nil at home, play for nil nil away and sneak the odd set piece. It's not going to be pretty, but if it gets us out of this god forsaken division then I'll be happy. Missing the first game of the season for the first time since forever, hopefully be at Bury away though. Looking forward to getting behind the lads. There's only so much Rugby League one can take. Bring on the new football season. UTO WTID

Was Downes any good? No. He was rubbish (bless him!) I made my debut on here last week by trying to tap into that rich vein of humour that flows seamlessly between entries, blah blah. No takers, thus proving Downes was not merely a waste of space on the pitch but also a crappy icebreaker forty years later. My apologies Steve if you're reading this. (As if!)
