Wednesday seal O'Grady deal

Wednesday have finally got their man today after Chris O'Grady completed a move to Hillsborough from Rochdale for an undisclosed fee.

The former Leicester City man has been a target of Owls boss Gary Megson throughout the summer and Wednesday had already tried and failed to secure his services before agreeing today's three-year contract with the attacker.

O'Grady played against Wednesday in Saturday's npower League One opener against Rochdale, which the Owls won 2-0. He came on as a second half substitute.

Owls boss Gary Megson told the official SWFC website: 'Chris' name was one of those on the list that I handed to Milan at the end of last season so I am really pleased that we have signed him now.

'Rochdale did not want to lose him and there was competition for his signature from a Championship club and one of our League 1 rivals, both of whom are in the Yorkshire area.

'Chris has a big physique and strong stature and defenders do not relish playing against him. He has honesty and a desire to play at the highest level and hopefully he will achieve his ambitions at this club.'

He takes the number nine shirt at Hillsborough and has made 206 league starts, scoring 57 goals along the way.

DELIGHTED! A really important signing: and suddenly we're really not far away from being a very decent side at this level - plus we go into a Cup game for the first time in a long time with a genuine chance of competing with pride. I don't expect a win; but I do expect to give em a game and its a while since I've felt that way.

I'd rather save the main team for Saturday. Bournemouth just won 5-0 so will be in a positive frame of mind for Saturday and I don't want us to be leggy!

Happy days, we are definitely looking like a big mean Sheffield Wednesday these days. As long as he has the desire and passion I'm delighted. I think little Le Fondre and a winger (Roberts) would make us a very good side!

Its gonna take time but i belive we have the coming together of a good side.We have a solid back four and midfield.Roberts would put the icing on the cake for me.

I may be totally wrong but i still think MM & GM have not given up on the idea of bringing Neil Mellor back ? ? ? ? Which i think most of us will agree, would not be a bad thing to happen. O'Grady and Mellor anybody?

I see Roberts scored again last night, would love him to come to us but really can't see it happening if I'm honest. We look a much stronger and tighter unit than last season due to the players that have left and those that have come in albeit a little lighter on numbers, what is it they say about quality over quantity!! Games come thick and fast at this level, home on Thursday night then away at Bournemouth Saturday for example, so bit concerned once a few injuries occur about our strength in depth. We look like having a top team if everyone is fit and available but if not......??

i think o'grady will do well for us. it seems that when he is settled in a team he scores goals so if megson has a plan for how he wants to play to him (which I assume he has being as he wanted this guy all summer) then he should do well. found this on youtube looks alright to me!

Cheers for the link Hirsty - like him a lot: plays with his head up, seems happy on either foot, battles, and is not afraid to take people on. Works for me. Personally I've no interest in seeing Mellor return - for me O'grady and players like him i.e. with something to prove and a desire to reach the top are preferable. Also I worry what happens with Mellor once he has a long term deal in his pocket. Would love to see a pacey striker added to the mix someone who plays on the shoulder and can make a real impact from the bench. Along of course with a quality winger or 2!

agree with most that he could be a good signing for us added competion up front

I'm with you Owler in that I have no wish to see Mellor back at the club. He scored 20 goals last season but didn't perform in the games against the better sides in the league and therefore it doesn't warrant the extra wages he would demand. I'm all for bringing in players with more desire to succeed and better themselves. O'Grady will be ideal competion with Madine up top and hopefully this will help them both to improve as footballers and in Madine's case, as a person!

Looks to be a good signing for us,only time will tell. Agree with sussexowl though,if we get a few injuries especially in attack then we will be in trouble. With our first 11 we should we able to beat most teams in this league on Saturdays showing but our strength in depth is poor. But well done to GM/MM for getting OGrady in.Now for a decent winger.

Thanks for the link, Hirsty's. Here's what I saw: Pros: Looks like he's got great finishing and positioning in the box, not scared to hit it first time, all signs of a quality striker. Cons: Not even one goal from a header, kind of weird for a guy who's very tall at the same time. It seems he is relying on a solid partner to set him up (such as Dagnal at Rochdale). Can't see that to be Madine honestly, so maybe we're looking at a O'Grady-Morrison partnership? All in all, really happy with this transfer, bring on B'pool

i watched the youtube thingy and i agree not one header and the other lad at rochdale looks like the workhorse dagnall, not a negative signing by any means and its great to see us signing players so i will give him the benefit of the doubt and hope he starts smashing them in for us

After Pruttons woeful season at Swindon last term, I was pessimistic about his signing. However, I have no qualms in holding my hand up for that opinion and being proved wrong - seems as though Prutton needed the challenge at Wednesday to raise his game, which he appears to have done (albeit it's only 1 game so far). Likewise, I can see the same happening with O'Grady, he will come good once he settles and prove to be a very shrewd signing. UTO.

We have signed another striker today. We won the first game of the season with just two on the books and after all the panic before the first game we are adding nicely to our squad. Will be easier to sign players now we look less desperate in the attacking third and teams can't hold us to ransom. UTO in Megson we trust!
