Owls eye Foxes striker swoop

Wednesday could be set to land a striker from Championship side Leicester City this week if reports are to be believed.

Owls boss Gary Megson, a former manager of the Foxes, is desperate to add more attacking options to his squad before the close of the transfer window at the end of the month and reports have pointed towards a deal for a City hitman this week.

Experienced striker Steve Howard has been linked with a move to Hillsborough but he's expected to be out of the running of a move to S6, with Championship sides Leeds United, Derby County and Portsmouth all after his services.

It means the Owls could be after one of Martyn Waghorn, Jeffrey Schlupp or Yann Kermorgant, to bolster their attack.

French striker Kermorgant is way down the pecking order at the King Power Stadium and is surplus to requirements with City boss Sven-Goran Eriksson.

The 29-year-old spent last season on loan in France after he came in for abuse following a penalty miss in the Foxes' play-off semi final defeat against Cardiff City at the end of the 2009-10 season.

Waghorn and Schlupp both featured for Leicester in their weekend defeat against Reading but both could fall down the pecking order if Eriksson gets his wish and brings a top new striker to the club before the end of August.

Schlupp started at the weekend but failed to make an impact after netting a hat-trick in his Foxes debut in the Carling Cup triumph over Rotherham United. Eriksson has said he could well be a key player in his side's promotion bid, but he may also look at a loan move away from the club as being beneficial for the striker.

Former Sunderland man Waghorn seems to be behind Schlupp in the pecking order, he started on the bench at the weekend, and seems to be out of favour with Eriksson.

With Darius Vassell set to return from suspension and a new striker set to arrive at the King Power Stadium shortly, all three of the above players could be surplus to requirements.

Owls chairman Milan Mandaric could help swing a deal in Wednesday's favour thanks to his links with the Foxes.

And he'll be hoping something can be sorted sooner rather than later following Wednesday's 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth at the weekend.

Curran dropped two divisions to play for us cos he was a Wednesdayite, so me Dad keeps telling me. Megson must have played arount the same time ...ish. Gary Cahill is a Wednesdayite who was signed by Megson. Reports are indicating he will be signed before end of August. You heard it here first!

Wait a minute, if TC was a true Wednesdayite how come he turned out for the other lot before he finished? And Cahill started with them, didn't he? So that's another one who slipped through the net. What net? As for Ryan Jones, he was a product of our youth system when we still had one, during Tricky's reign. He hit the floor running, I recall that much. I think he won a full Welsh cap before he was twenty (on account of having a Welsh sounding name) and then....? I do know he got injured around about '93 but did it end his career? It's just one of life's little mysteries.

To be honest I would like a last minute signing. the evening the transfer windows closes I usually watch the countdown wincing if we are to loose a Brunt, Grant, Tudgay. The last day is where clubs have to except what a player is worth or take less in January so hopefully might bag a decent striker.

ryan jones got injured and it ended his career, i seem to remember it was an ankle injury of some sort. he was a magic player, got stuck in and had plenty of talent for a big lad. i know he ended up working for the club in some capacity. a big shame he had to stop

Waghorn struck up a good partnership with Matty Fryatt last year and he did all the running and he is quite nippy and strong I reckon he would be perfect someone has to start running in the right direction up front soon

Thanks for the info Shinpads and I think you're right. Jones was one of those youngsters who might easily have gone all the way. I never did hear why he'd disappeared off the radar, until now. Cheers!

Think Ryan Jones retired due to an on set of arthritis in his ankles and knees. He berly got going before his career went into decline. It's a pity, he could have been a good find.

Ryan Jones tried a comeback at Worksop Town about the same time as Waddle was there, think he lasted 1 season but injury forced him to jack in. Anyone heard the rumour about Alan Smith coming to S6, he been released at Newcastle

Martyn Waghorn has been valued at approx 1.5mill by Leicester so that rules us out. Alan Smith is/was on colossal wages and will not drop down to fit in with a League 1 wage structure. He'll end up at a Championship Club pushing for promotion in my opinion. So who does that leave us to go for... I know, there's a bloke at Preston called Neil Mellor, maybe we could go for him?

From the games I have watched so far this season (inc the Cherries), the main issue with our strikers is that they are always under too much pressure. They are constantly being crowed out, mauled by multiple defenders or not being backed up by the midfield when they hold the ball up. This is because we don't (apart from the absent JJ) have any pace on the wing, and due to poor passing / movement off the ball we are not catching the other teams on the break. Get these issues sorted and our strikers will come good.

so it turns out the Leicester target was Schlupp. Sven's ruled out letting him go for now. back to the drawing board but who can we go for? I know, there's a bloke at Rotherham called Adam le Fondre, maybe we could go for him?

I know, Carbone, it's a dilemma isn't it. Perhaps Megson_out could offer a few suggestions. Let's see, Rooney's under contract and Nasri's unlikely to drop a couple of divisions. How about Crouch? Or Defoe? Or Johnson at Man C, he's a speedy winger. There's probably one or two feeling the pinch at Barcelona too, now Fabregas has signed up there. So come on, Mandaric, let's see the colour of your money.
