Owls Land Marshall On Loan

Wednesday have today completed the loan signing of 20-year-old Ben Marshall from Stoke City, intially until January 2012.

The winger, who can also pay up front, was on loan at Carlisle for the past 18 months, and broke his leg in the Johnstone`s Paint Trophy final against Brentford last season.

The youngster left Manchester United`s youth side to join Crewe Alexandra`s academy in 2005. He spent four years there until he joined Stoke City in 2009. He has yet to make an appearance for Stoke, but has been out on loan to Northampton & Cheltenham along with Carlisle.

Averaging a goal every 6 games in his career so far, we can`t rely upon him to be the goal poacher, but maybe he can be the creator.

Welcome to Wednesday, Ben. Good luck!

Lets hope he can provide the outlet we have needed since losing JJ to injury. Not ideal hoping a 20 year old loanee can change our form but at least we have got someone in. Have we given up on Roberts and LeFondre?

I think it's dependent on what number shirt they give Marshall. If it's 10 then we're screwed!

I'm thinking that I must be confused like the rest of the Wednesday faithful... Let's think back to what has been said by GM and MM. "I will make sure Gary gets the players we need!", "Teams that got success last season did so without waves of loan players, they had quality squads.", "I'm looking for a Squad of 20 out-field players and 3 goal keepers!" oh and "We need quality and not quantity... I don't want other clubs cast-offs, I want players that the teams are sad to let go!". This is rapidly turning into a repeat of the mistakes of the past!! I know football is a business but it is not a business first... not to the fans! I for one totally agreed with the idea of less higher quality players but it seems we weren't willing to spend what it required to land the players like Charlton and other clubs. I for one back Megson I just wish Milan would as if this lands on Meggo I think it unfair! The team is an improvement in part on what we had if they play to their potential (That was the last squads issue to though!) but the players we were linked with that we have failed to sign may have turned an ok squad into an amazing one!! I still have the un-wavering faith but come on the Suit wearers sort it out!!! WTID

4evaOWL. I think that you are spot on with your comments. The inevitable excuse is that needs must with JJ being injured. no need to explain why but JJ shouldnt even be considered as a starting 11 contribution. Im not saying break the wage structure nor pay over the odds for below averag players but what is frustrating is that Uchechi, Lines and now Marshall are players to be fair that are not the long awaited answer we have been anticipating. These could have been signed after the last day of the season and gone to Austria to gel. Mellor LF and Roberts are worth waiting for!

The only blame Mandy derserves is appointing a Manager that no quality creative player wants to come and play for ... at any price. He can talk a good game but Megson can't make it happen on the pitch.

A goal scorers a must, this long ball $hit is jus boring its school boy stuff. The players whom pre season and first game of season looked promising now look disheartened in their game.Cannot understand megsons subs yday wen jones n ogrady went off injured,y bring on 2 defenders wen theres 2 forwards sat on bench. If things dont pick up i can see this being one hell of along boring season.

Agree with you TheMightyBoosh. Was not against the Lines signing but wasn't at all happy to see him handed the fabled No. 8 Shirt; and if Marshall wears 10 I'm going to be rather disheartened considering all the rhetoric we've heard over the summer. Additionally I've never been a fan of 6 month loan deals : loans are fair enough but if a players good enough get him for the season - why risk disrupting everything in January. Really felt that after the takeover we'd buy players rather than continue with the policy of free transfers and loans........ When does the window close???!!!!

If the loan works out there's nothing to say in January it won't be extended to the end of the season. I reserve judgement on any player until he's had a few games under his belt to settle in and got to know his teammates. Would have been nice to win the 1st 3 games and be top but I recall we had a good start last season, it's a marathon not a sprint. After 10 to 15 games I would expect us to be in the top 6 though not 2/3's of the way down the league.

Haven't seen the stats for the Bury game but my guess is they had more possession than we did, just like Bournemouth, just like Blackpool, just like Rochdale. This is what you get when you appoint a Manager who encourages players to treat a football like a hand grenade... don't whatever you do hold on to it... just get rid. We'll get more of the same on Saturday.

Amazingly if you rearrange the words Megson_Out you get Blade For Life ... quite happy with the signing he should provide an outlet for both the midfield and defence to pick out rather than the long balls weve seen so far this season .

Look at the facts guys: 1. We played a team who were less supported than we were... I know coz I was there. 2. We played a team that unlike Wednesday are completely new to League One football. 3. We played a team who's Manager (unlike Megson) is new to football management....Bury's his first job ffs! 4. We played a team who unlike Wednesday couldn't afford ANY new signings at all in the summer. And yet despite all these disadvantages, they played us off the park, not by hoofing it 60 yards hoping some static brick house might get a lucky head to it. And how many times has Megson served these crass tactics up? How many times does he think a 'hair dryer' team talk will inspire players before they do what we all do when the wife's off on one....switch off! We need leadership not half time rants. We need possession football not kick and run. We need a Manager who believes in the modern passing game not someoone who pins everything on set pieces. Only then will we get quality players wanting to come and play for us.

Blimey, he's on here and all! Okay, try these facts for size: 1 Wimbledon had the fewest fans on the planet but they still won the FA Cup. 2 Bury have that impetus gained following promotion, like Rochdale last season and like Soton and Brighton are enjoying right now. 3 Their manager (unlike Megson) was in a no lose situation. 4 If Bury were the better team on the night then sometimes you just have to be big enough to admit it. I ask you again, for what seems like the umpteenth time. Names names. Who is this manager we all need? Identify this champion of passing possession football. This magnet for quality players. And for the sake of your wife's sanity it's to be hoped he's available!

Good signing, he'll fit in great watching us hit aimless balls from the back sent up for Madine as the other team retains possesion and waltz there way through our "tough" midfield and defence that would be hard to beat under Megson. We might as well just play 5-0-5 and skip midfield?

Lets leave WAGs and their sanity out of this unless you're prepared to take mine off my hands. So you're a fan of the 'Wimbledon' long ball game Our Maurice. Wimbledon ffs!! And this is what you'd do to our beloved Wednesday?! Turn us into a crazy gang with less ball control than bulls in stiletoes. Well if Megson stays you'll get your wish but I think you'll find the majority of Wednesdayites would rather a team of Sheridans and Waddles than Vinnie Jones et al. Seems you and Megson have been asleep this last 1/4 century. What worked 25 years ago just won't cut it in the modern game whatever division you're in. Name names to replace the current Hair Dryer you say. Alright, start with my Auntie EIsie... thining ginger hair, die hard Wednesdayite, blind as a bat. Why not...she's got all the same qualifications as Megson but even she's not daft enough to play a striker with an injury! Failing that you've got any number of bright young managers who aren't stuck like Duran Duran in the 80's. We need a change of football culture at Hillsborough even if it takes a season to bed in. We need to modernise on the pitch not just off it. We need a Sheridan or an O'Driscoll or a Darren Fergurson or a Poyet. From what I saw the other night I'd even give Ritchie Barker a shout after the basic footballing lesson he gave Hair Dryer. At least Wimbledon used to WIN ugly. With Megson we're just ugly.

We've never had much luck employing ex-players as managers with the exception of Sgt. Wilko. (even that was not pretty). Look at the failures in the likes of Derek Dooley, Peter Eustace, Trevor Francis and now GM. there is one, however I would trust to bring it all back. Step forward Roland Nilsson.

Whoa!! I know it's easy to misinterpret the written word but whatever gave you the impression I admired the Wimbledon of old? Jeezus! I was merely responding to your comment re: the number of Bury supporters the other night. If you can't make the connection then perhaps our little debate is doomed to fail. Which would be a shame since we're having so much FUN. If you recall an earlier comment I asked whether the HW style of the mid80s was a workable blueprint. Again, I wasn't endorsing it. BUT... what I will say is that IF Meggo is trying to replicate it and IF he brings in the players and gets them to adopt that style efficiently then our chances of promotion this season would improve dramatically. Don't forget Wilko had one or two flair players in his squad; Bannister & Varadi and later Marwood & Blair and those are the types of player GM is still trying to bring in. I'm hopeful he will, just as I'm hopeful the team will put together a consistent string of performances to keep us within easy reach of the leaders come January. As for your preferred replacements? Well keep 'em coming folks if it makes you happy. Personally, I'm unimpressed. Shez invites comparison. You might add Turner & Wilson to dll's list although I'd never regard Tricky's time here a failure. We've recruited 'overnight sensation' managers in the past too without success (Jewell and let's hear it for Danny Williams, thankya very much) And for every Big Jack and Big Ron there's a David Pleat. Far too many managers given far too little time to do their job. Big Jack needed three seasons to get us out of this division, we're all expecting GM to do it in one. It's a tough ask but I'm gonna get behind him all the way.

Carbone, it's not a matter of getting behind the Club. Love this club Megson's in charge or not. I'm just not behind a manager who's failed to make ANY progress on the pitch in the 25 plus games he's been in charge. If you or Maurice can point to just ONE area under Hair Dryer where we've improved, I'll stop posting. Given enough time and money ANY manager could take us up. It's a question of how much time and with what kind of football. Megson thinks he can do it with long balls and set pieces, and Our Maurice would give him all the time in the world. Well it's not just ugly, IT DOESN'T WORK because the modern game's changed. Look at the teams who got promoted from this division last season. Southampton were in an even worst state than Wednesday 18 months ago. Now look where they are. Poyet at Brighton made an impact after ONE game not 25!! He attracted creative attacking players who don't need a Hair Dryer talk at half time. Look where Brighton are. Neither of these teams won promotion playing ugly because unlike Megson they're not stuck in the 80's! And does anyone remember how Donny Rovers got out of this division? Were you there Maurice when they played us off the pitch with PASSING attacking football??

I wasn't criticising you Megson_Out, if anything I admire your passion I think it's great. All I was trying to say is it's out of our hands anyway isn't it. So we may as well just try and make some positive vibes about the club and back it as much as possible. Mandaric will make any necessary judgement calls when he has to and I've got faith in the man to deliver for us. I do agree with your points about the style of play but lets face it, we haven't exactly been the Sheff Wed of the 90's since... well, the 90's. You have to bear in mind that the amount this club has rotted over a such a long period of time (on every possible level I might add), it's not going to be a magic wand job to correct it all. Now, having said that, positive steps have been taken off the field, albeit with a little less financial muscle than was promised, but we DO still have a club in existence - which is surely Mission One accomplished isn't it? I think all Megson has attempted to do is make the lads more effective from set plays but the actual style of play is, as you've rightly identified, not good to watch. I don't think that's Megson's doing, I think thats down to a string of Manager's who've instilled that into the general mindset of the players for a long time. What I do find refreshing is the way Megson will happily leave people out if they aren't performing. I also like the way he makes that point absolutely clear. I'm not saying GM is the perfect Manager, but give him a bit more of a chance mate. See where we are in a bit. You're very possibly correct, he may not be the man but we're 3 games in. Let's just wait and see...

Funnily enough, I'd tipped Meggo to replace Brian Laws. As it was the board appointed Irvine and we went down anyway. Last season was starting to look like deja vu until GM came in and arrested that slide. So does that count as an area where improvement is evident? He's applied the brakes and strives to instil pride and responsibility into a bunch of players who were clearly lacking in both? Okay, how about this- Unless there are others wishing to air an opinion I suggest we put our little debate to a vote. The poll in the bottom r/h corner is hopelessly outdated anyway. So, in relation to Megson's current tenure, should he: 1 Go immediately 2 Have his fate decided prior to the January transfer window 3 Make the decision at the end of this season or 4 Allow him to operate without fear of the chop. Naturally if (as I sincerely hope) everything clicks into place real soon and we storm to our first championship in over 50years, I fully expect Megson_Out to do the honourable thing. Hey, I'll even provide the rope. But in the meantime I trust there's some mechanism in place that prevents him from punching option one until his wrist goes numb.

Out of work managers: Zola - plays good football not always great results Dennis Wise Graeme Souness Gordon Strachan George Burley Glenn Roeder Alan Curbishley are all "big names" out of work the real question is would they want to drag it out in league one under the pressure of expectant wednesday fans and MM.. theres a list of out of work managers http://www.leaguemanagers.com/ The other side is spending money to go and pay off a club for a managers services, costing more money which appears to be against what were doing at the moment, But after 3 games scape goating megson isnt the way forward imo.

All of those are good shouts 1867 (except Roeder) but like you, as disimpressed as I am, i'm not looking for a managers head 3 games into the season with HIS squad (forget that he's been in charge a lot longer)
Owls That!

3 points tomorrow would start making things better swiftly followed by another 3 points in the next match at home, all of a sudden that's 9 points from 5 games which is promotion form!! Give GM and his new players a chance for gods sake, very few managers in the last 15 years have been given a decent crack of the whip, changing a manager very 12-18 months does nothing to guarantee success which is built on stability. For the first time since I was a spotty teenager nicking fags off my dad and watching my mates dads porno videos which had dodgy music (and even dodgier hair cuts (men and women)) Wednesday have stability off the pitch, lets build on it together and get this great club back where it should be.

It's time for some Jedi mind tricks - how about this for a crazy idea. We should move to a smaller knackered old stadium and pretend we are a small club. Stop the other teams thinking it's the cup final every time they play us - we are a league one team and need to act like one!

Lol Seattle. Carbone, I think O'Drisc would be my man. He looks about ready for a new challenge. Retfordowl, my first game was Port Vale '77 (I think it was '77 ??). We lost 0-3 and though I've had plenty of lows since I am and I always will remain behind the Club. Managers on the other hand come and go and whether or not I get behind them depends on what they serve up on the pitch. The League table doesn't lie. We've made no progress whatsoever under Megson and persisting with this ugly long ball game will keep us in this division.

Deep down I doubt anyone should be looking for the manager's head after so few games but it's more and more a results driven business these days. Yes the football isn't pleasing to watch but if we turn the corner and the results start to come then we would all accept that to get out of this league we're in. If the results don't come and we're playing poorly as well then MM is no mug as he's shown in the past. I think the relationship with GM and MM may be more strained that we are led to believe!

I did submit the suggestion for a new poll using the options stated above (comment 26?) As nothing has materialized I presume the folks who run this site share the opinion that calling the manager's position into question after so few games is preposterous and also counter productive. There's no doubt we're all Wednesdayites so let's stop trying to score points off one another and instead work together to help the team take three off Notts.Co

Why does Ecco Owl feel the need to be sooo nasty?? Quit with the insults matey, we're just Wednesdayites havin a debate. Halifax, I wouldn't say no to Robins. There are a few young Managers who could bring our game into the modern age. People say our expectations are too high. I think it's the opposite. I can't remember the last time I left a game feeling electrified by a Wednesday performance, can you? Can anyone?? There is no reason why we should settle for the same old same old, season in season out, while small town clubs put us to the sword. Boosh. Maurice, if you're right and I'm suffering from a case of premature ejection (!) I'll hold my hand up. Maybe today we'll see some proof of Megson's master plan, right? Live in hope, die in despair. Come on Wednesday!

It seems to me that Mandaric is not completely behind Megson MM obviously has money but dosen't seem prepared to spend it and get us moving forward We paid (rumoured) around 350,000 for O'Grady who i think scored 9 goals in 49 games last season but he is not prepared to bid more than 250,000 for Le Fondre who has scored 56 in the last 2 seasons and already has 3 this season We are playing the ugly route one football because with the players we have that is all we can play 2 big tall strikers and no wingers Bids for 7 different players in the last week or so seems like we are panicking already, with ALF playing like he is it is adding more to his value every week and alerting more and more clubs to his ability. We have left it too late i believe and whoever (if anyone) that comes in between now and the end of August is more than likely gonna be a rushed panic signing and we will probably not benefit from it in any way what-so-ever I hope i am proven wrong and that we do all get surprised by us signing ALF AND another winger but judging by the way GM always talks in press conferences/interviews etc i am afraid we will end up with neither and end up watching ALF score 20+ goals again this season for Rotherham or whoever is fortunate enough to snap him up.
