Wednesday could lose out to Championship side Reading in the race to sign Rotherham United's much sought-after striker Adam Le Fondre.
The Owls have been chasing Le Fondre for a number of weeks and have seen three bids knocked back by the Millers. They've seemingly been the front-runners for his services.
But now Reading could step in just days before the close of the current transfer window and match Rotherham's asking price, believed to be around £500,000, to sign the 24-year-old.
The Royals had shown initial interest in the striker in December but Brian McDermott, the Reading manager, said last week that he wasn't looking to add a striker to his squad. That seems to have changed, according to reports from Reading, with the club making more money available for McDermott to bolster his squad.
Reading lost star striker Shane Long to West Brom a matter of weeks ago and some of the money from his sale will go into strengthening their squad.
Wednesday could still go back to Rotherham with a new and improved bid for Le Fondre, but even if the Owls' offer is accepted, Reading will still be seen as favourites thanks to their advantage of offering Championship football, rather than League One.
Barnsley could also be in for Le Fondre, should striker Danny Haynes move away from Oakwell in the coming days, while Coventry City have also been linked.
For Wednesday, Gary Megson has already said that he has other options, putting in bids for two 'lower league' strikers - one of which is understood to be Le Fondre.
