Reading enter race for Le Fondre signing

Wednesday could lose out to Championship side Reading in the race to sign Rotherham United's much sought-after striker Adam Le Fondre.

The Owls have been chasing Le Fondre for a number of weeks and have seen three bids knocked back by the Millers. They've seemingly been the front-runners for his services.

But now Reading could step in just days before the close of the current transfer window and match Rotherham's asking price, believed to be around 500,000, to sign the 24-year-old.

The Royals had shown initial interest in the striker in December but Brian McDermott, the Reading manager, said last week that he wasn't looking to add a striker to his squad. That seems to have changed, according to reports from Reading, with the club making more money available for McDermott to bolster his squad.

Reading lost star striker Shane Long to West Brom a matter of weeks ago and some of the money from his sale will go into strengthening their squad.

Wednesday could still go back to Rotherham with a new and improved bid for Le Fondre, but even if the Owls' offer is accepted, Reading will still be seen as favourites thanks to their advantage of offering Championship football, rather than League One.

Barnsley could also be in for Le Fondre, should striker Danny Haynes move away from Oakwell in the coming days, while Coventry City have also been linked.

For Wednesday, Gary Megson has already said that he has other options, putting in bids for two 'lower league' strikers - one of which is understood to be Le Fondre.

If he goes to them there will be only two people responsible for him not coming to us. This is what you get for f00king about in the transfer market and trying to get him on the cheap.

I agree... if MM had been willing to part with a bit more money, he would already have been in the blue & white stripes!

That may not be us f****d because he may not want to keep the reading bench warm and also out of all the clubs chasing him we are the biggest. So its not if Reading and Coventrys honours are bursting at the seems. As for Andy Scotts comments well i can only think he will never get the chance to manage a club with so much history and a fan base like ours.EVEN OUR GATES AT PRESENT ARE BIGGER THEN THERES.So if he chooses either of them its just a bigger payrise he wants.

I will say this much, if an offer for ALF hasnt been made and accepted by the end of today. And he hasnt had a medical, we can forget signing him. The only thing that is going to stop him from moving is the fact that he has family up here, he's settled and he's going to take into account that his missus lives and works up here too.

Because it will show just how serious we were in him. The board have tried to behave in a way where things like this only happen in the Premiership. Like I said, Rotherham said weeks ago how much they were willing to accept for ALF and they thought they could act like the big boys do, and that aint going to happen.

Oh dear. Not so confident now. just been back to my source. Deal was done - can't go into the details but can't believe what i'm hearing- and other teams are now coming in as you now see. From what i've heard they can't be that bothered about him. West Ham have also been mentioned!!! I can see a name change coming on. I should have kept my gob shut but i just got excited cos i want him to sign. Seriously it should have been a case of dotting the i's and crossing the t's.

This bigger club talk don't mean nowt, if a team comes in for you and there in abetter league where would you go? At 24 he's going to want to prove himself and no doubt try to get to the promiseland and not stay around league 1.

According to a local newspaper in Reading the one thing we have going for us is that ALF , reprtedly, has said that he would like to stay up North. That dont mean much I know cos it could go in the likes of Derby way. It also dont mean that Barnsley might make a cheeky bid for him aswell.

Well to soften any likelihood of disappointment, let's make up captions to go with the photo at the top of this page. I'll make a start: Reading's boss says: "Is it a bird, is it a plane? No, it's some bloke with a face like a baboon's a**e!"

If all it takes to get ALF is the quoted price plus a player let them have Madine. Can't possibly understand what people see in him. Total waste of whatever money we're paying him.

Lets face the facts, yes wE were a big club, but thats irrellevant now. the club is now a league 1 club, and cant attract the likes of Koumas who we were linked with. ALF would be a quality signing but lets face it , id take a non-league nobody as long as they scored goals for our football club. and as for giving Madine up didnt we pay 800k for him so itd be a bit ridicoulous to let him go. And the guy hasnt had the best of service at all to be fair to him,.

Rotherham United striker, Adam Le Fondre will sign for Reading, subject to a medical and personal terms. It's understood that Reading beat West Ham, Coventry and Sheffield Wednesday for the twenty-four year old's signature. It is thought, though not confirmed, that the price for Alfie was 350k with add ons - but, out of that we have to pay a percentage to Rochdale (where he came to the Millers from) which is thought to be twenty-five per cent. I think all Millers fans knew Alfie was going, though many thought he would be with us tomorrow for the game against Gillingham. At least, it's all been sorted now and Andy Scott still has time to get his 'Plan B' sorted and get in a striker to replace Alfie and his goals. Me, I'm pleased he's chosen to go to Reading because if he'd gone to Sheffield Wednesday I am certain that Rotherham fans would have grumbled and groaned and moaned about him - now we can remember him for his goals and what he brought to Rotherham United. All at Vital Rotherham want to wish Alfie all the best for his future. Read more: http://www.rotherham.vitalfootball.co.uk/article.asp?a=252928#ixzz1WAchfAPD

350k , minus 87k they have to pay Rochdale, plus 'add ons'. Be nice to see what type of 'quality' player they can get for 267k. And eberyone is right when they say that there is no mention of it on any site.

350k plus add ons doesn't sound like big money for someone who scores goals. you pay more for strikers than any other position. If Alfie goes off and scores 10/15 in the championship at Reading and we fail to find our 20 a season man whether in our squad or the transfer market this was really stupid. I haven't seen ALF play so I am hoping he is little slow and crap because I have seen some Torquay United strikers who can score in league 2 but I would never want to see near a Wednesday shirt! Apart from Rodney Jack or Jason Roberts

Reading are close to completing the signing of striker Adam Le Fondre from Rotherham, for a fee believed to be around 350k with add-ons. The Rotherham striker known as 'Alfie' is set to travel down to Berkshire today to complete his medical while his soon-to-be team-mates are in action at Hull. Le Fondre, 24, has been recognised as one of the Football League's deadliest strikers, having the best scoring record for the previous two seasons. The former Stockport County player had one year left on his current deal and McDermott has been an admirer of the forward for a long time. Sheffield Wednesday and Championship rivals Coventry were also keen on Le Fondre but the Royals have appeared to have won the race. The prolific striker scored 25 goals last season in 46 games with him having 4 goals to name already this season. Read more: http://www.reading.vitalfootball.co.uk/article.asp?a=252978#ixzz1WEl5LAez

Once Reading got involved they were always going to win the race, just wonder if stepping up two divisions will work. The way they've started the season we could be swopping leagues next year with them anyway.
