Wednesday bid for Bury hitman Lowe

Wednesday have made a bid to sign in-form Bury striker Ryan Lowe, according to reports today.

Owls boss Gary Megson is desperate to bolster his attacking options before the close of the transfer window tomorrow and has turned to Lowe, who has already netted seven goals in as many appearances so far this season.

Wednesday have been linked with the striker, who turns 33 next month, for a number of weeks but BBC Radio Sheffield is now reporting an official offer has been made to the Gigg Lane club.

Lowe has played his football career in the lower leagues, starting in non-league, but made a name for himself last season when he helepd Bury to promotion from League Two with 28 goals from 50 appearances.

And he's continued that goalscoring form into League One this season, including one goal when Bury beat Wednesday at Gigg Lane earlier this month.

Bury will be desperate to hang on to their star striker, but at 32, Lowe could well be keen for a move to Hillsborough.

He could join Lomana LuaLua, who is currently in discussions with the Owls over a move to S6, in bolstering Megson's attacking options.

Not paying up for ALF or MacDonald. Goalscorers are always worth a gamble but can't help think this article should be titled 'Lowe Ambition'

Don't understand how we've faffed about in trying to sign decent aged quality goal scorers, and now trying to sign players that will last a season. Anyhow uto.

Arguably our most successful and enjoyable football was played (in recent years) by a team managed by Big Fat Ron. He did not go out and buy young players "Ones for the future" He went out and grabbed proven experienced players to build success today not in the future. We left all that to David Pleat (Wayne Collins etc) I say get the players capable of getting us out of this league then go again.

Lowe is a proven goalscorer, someone who knows where the goal is and puts it away when the chance comes his way, I thought that was what we needed?? it would be great if he was 25 but then other teams would come in for him (ALF is a case in point) and pay more than we're willing to. If we were to land Lowe then I would give him a chance to be a success in the famous blue and white stripes and not write him off before he's even signed or pulled the shirt on for the first time.

I know the fella is old.But we need goals and having seen some of his goals this last couple of seasons looks a quality finisher and if the deal gets done can see him been our top scorer.Still think we need a winger that can play down the middle as well with pace and promotion here we come.UTO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

7 in 7 so far this season. So lets back him. He could provide the goals to get us promoted. To be frank - age isn't the barrier in League one it may be higher up. Lee Hughes, Jamie Cureton and obviously Lowe are 3 examples of 30+ strikers who have been doing the business at this level of late. That said if he signs today I'd still like us to be bidding for McDonald tomorrow. Oh and please no deal for LuaLua.

I think this is a fantastic signing. 7 in 7!!! His record the past two seasons is phenomenal, just what we need. Yes he's 33 but lets focus on the now, not two years down the line - just look at Wenger for that!!! And maybe he can act as a mentor for Madine...lots of positives to take.

to be honest the kasnik guy, well i would'nt know him if i fell over him, and ryan lowe is not my idea of a centre forward, but who knows, he really cant do any worse upfront than we have been doing of late, and without supply, no forwrd is going to set the league alight, but when i see the quality of some of the signings made since mm arrived im not convinced we are moving totally in the right direction, i know some were pre megson, but we are supposed to be able to compete with other teams now to sign players, maybe im wrong, but i dont see us being so successful on the competing front, it seems to me, that if a decent player has a choice, he choses elsewhere, megson always said "its not the size of the squad its the quality" is that still his mantra, or is there a hint of panic creeping in, because as ignorant as i am in the realms of football management, i dont see real quality being signed, as for giving people a chance to "pull the famous shirt on" well 7 or 8 of them who played against bradford, well i'd pull it off em, dont get me wrong, i couldnt care less about the JPT but come on 70% posession and 3 attempts on target, i dont care how many were out injured, or how many were rested, you could get a team out of longley park who'd create more than we did, the style was wrong, the tactics were wrong, and the players are wrong, people'll get the hump, and trot out all this garbage about support the team, and its a second string 11, but it doesnt wash with me, if something is wrong then it needs putting right, and that last night was wrong, i agree 100% with what megson is trying to do, i just dont agree with how he's trying to do it, a quality squad? im not so sure. Lowe is an outstanding signing, much better than Le Fondre, and I was one of the ones who wanted Le Fondre. People who are saying "Oh its a terrible signing, hes 32yrs old" please just nip over to the Bury website and check out this guys scoring stats they are no less than amazing his ratio is through the roof and proven in this league. 7 goals already this season in League 1 and classed as the most lethal striker in the football league. Now tell me what more could we want !! Seriously !! UP THE OWLS.

He could well be the first 20 goal a season strikers we've had for a while (Maclean??), given his age he'll be extra keen to make the most of his opportunity so if we get 30 or 40 goals from him in the next couple of years then I'll be well happy. BTW, how old is kevin phillips who is still banging in the goals in in the championship, the age argument is a pretty weak one for me. I'd rather sign a 32 year old proven goal scorer than an 18 year old kid at this time, experience is key at this level. That said, I'm slightly concerned about the amount of chances we'll be able to create for him but given his goal scoring record he may need less chances than others, time will tell!! Debut on Monday at Charlton maybe??
