Owls stopper sidelined for three months

Owls stopper sidelined for three months

Wednesday goalkeeper Nicky Weaver will be sidelined for three months with a knee injury.

The former Manchester City and Charlton Athletic goalkeeper travelled to America to see a specialist on his on-going knee problem and the results were not as bad as first feared.

There was speculation that the stopper may miss the rest of the campaign, and even that his career may be in doubt.

Manager Gary Megson told BBC Radio Sheffield: 'It's nowhere near as bad as it could have been, but he'll be out around three months.'

Richard O'Donnell has taken his place in goal and it's unclear whether Megson will stick with the 22-year-old or enter the loan market to bolster his goalkeeping options while Weaver is out.

We have a tradition for producing young, top class goalies like Fox, Turner, Bolder and Pressman. Richard O'Donnell should at least be handed this opportunity to show his worth. Bringing in another loanee may have a negative impact on his development and that would be a bigger shame than Weaver's injury.

Sad news for Weaver but Totally agree with OurMaurice. I wanted to say that even before this news, as I personally wanted Richard O'Donnell to keep the number 1 jersey this season after his performances, and also produce a great save against MKD that kept us in the game that nobody has mentioned. But more importantly if we want to get promoted this year, all due respect to Weaver but we need to embrace players that grow upwards naturally with the club. This guy is one of them and patiently waited his time to get his chance. If we go into the Championship next season we need young, good, loyal, players and it starts from the back. I hope Megson see’s this and doesn’t loan anyone else in. .I was gutted when Grant left and thought we would never replace him but OM is right, we do produce good keepers. Looking forward Tuesday. UTO!!

Gary Megson say's that we have 3 good keepers Weaver being one, O'Donnell 2 and Jameson 3, so from that i take it he's gonna use the two back-up keepers.

I hope he does keep with O'Donnell. Bringing through youth is the best way to build. I am hoping this where MM is also investing. A good youth set-up repays itself time after time, look at Southampton. O'Donnell has played well and looks up for it. His only mistakes have been through inexperience and there is only one way to sort that. Youngsters like O'Donnell and Palmer coming through pave the way for future youngsters as the fans become more used to development and give them more time.
