Burton Albion 2-1 Wednesday

A youthful Wednesday side finished the pre-season off with a defeat after falling 2-1 to Burton Albion at the Pirelli Stadium on Monday night.

The Owls took the lead after 19 minutes when Kyle Jordan took advantage of some sloppy Albion defending to slot the ball comfortably passed Albion stopper Stuart Tomlinson.

The home side bagged two goals in quick succession before the break though as Darren Stride headed home to level the scores before Aaron Webster scored the decisive goal just before the stroke of half time.

After the 2-1 home defeat to Middlesbrough on Saturday and with the season opener at Preston just five days away, Owls boss Paul Sturrock decided to leave the senior squad at home for a rest and gave the young academy players a chance to shine ahead of the big kick-off.

New signing Wade Small was expected to take part in the friendly but was left out of the squad as a precaution, as was left back John Hills who made a substitute appearance on his way back from injury in the defeat to 'Boro.

Wednesday will send a side to play Sheffield FC tomorrow evening and it's expected both Small and Hills will play some part in the match alongside the academy players to build up their fitness in time for the new season.
