Oliver to referee Sheffield derby clash

Premier League referee Michael Oliver will be the man in the middle for this Sunday's Steel City derby clash between Wednesday and United at Bramall Lane.

The Football League announced its official appointments today and Oliver, who regularly takes control of top-flight matches, will be the man to control what's set to be a feisty first Sheffield derby match of the season.

Oliver, from Northumberland, who promoted to the Select Group of Referees in 2010 and later that year became the youngest-ever Premier League referee.

But he's caught the headlines for all the wrong reasons so far this season, being the man in charge when Aston Villa were awarded a controversial penalty in their 1-1 draw at QPR earlier this term. Armand Traore was adjudged to have pulled the shirt of Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor, a decision which angered R's boss Neil Warnock at the time.

Simon Long and Simon Barrow will assist him, while Neil Swarbrick will be the fourth official.

You'd hope it wouldn't matter, meaning the last person you'd want to see out there is the ref. I just hope both sides don't decide their happy to play the first twenty minutes without a ball.

They cold put a monkey in the middle, I dont give a toss. Now we seem to have pieced the jig saw together. Just bring the pigs to slaughter and all will be wonderful in Wednesdayland

Shouldn't be too hard on M_O. He's helped to polarize support for the manager if nothing else. And those subliminal coaching tips (passing, not relying on set pieces & shooting from distance) seem to be doing the trick an' all! :0D

Danny Wilson is 20/1 to be new Northern Ireland Manager. Its a poison challice - so should he try to make a team out of poor players that he knows is never gonna have a chance of even competing - let alone winning - or should he take the Nothern Ireland managers Job instead?

Brilliant.

Would prefer a slightly more experienced ref, Oliver's only about 15. Let's hope we're not talking about the ref after the game, only a magnificent Owls victory and going level at the top with Charlton after they lose!!!!
