Weaver set for return to training

Wednesday goalkeeper Nicky Weaver is set for a return to the training pitch tomorrow ahead of schedule.

The Owls' number one has been sidelined for two-and-a-half months after suffering a knee injury but will give Owls boss Gary Megson a boost when he returns to Middlewood Road tomorrow.

The 32-year-old is still a while away from a return to first team football action but is ahead of schedule in regaining full fitness.

Megson told the Sheffield Star: 'Nicky is stepping up his work now, though it doesn't mean that he`s ready to be picked yet.'

Stephen Bywater has been standing in for Weaver on-loan from Derby County and has been impressive in the matches he's played in so far.

He signed on a 93-day emergency loan deal to cover Weaver and will continue in goal until the Owls' regular number one is ready for a return.

Feel we should keep Bywater for the season anyway. He's been superb and we may very well need them both - a top 2 spot could come to 1 point! And solid keepers are extremely valuable over the course of a season.

glad weaver is getting fit but i have been very impressed with what bywater has had to offer and i would like us to keep him

Agreed Bywater has been a class act since he signed for us and he is a free agent at the end of the season having to quality keepers must be a priority if we go up i like Weaver but he is prone to injury but having both Weaver and Bywater around can only aid the young lads O'Donnell and Jameson

I suppose wages could be a hurdle. I'm guessing Bywater is on a decent whack at Derby (at very least the going rate for the Championship, maybe more if he was part of the squad who 'enjoyed' that brief flirtation with the Prem). Derby want shut and that's why they refused us permission to play him in the Cup. He's proved his worth with us, no question about that, but can an agreement be reached before our status for next season is known? I doubt it somehow. We might be able to extend his loan but it seems like Weaver is returning at just the right time for us.

Either way the chips fall in regards to Bywater, this is good news. Yes, I hope we can keep both, and maybe if GM is of the same strong view, he'll get MM to dig a wee bit deeper to make it happen, not that I'm asking for more and MM isn't already walking on roses in my view (?).
