Wednesday boss Gary Megson was delighted to see his side pick up a big three points over in-form Leyton Orient at Hillsborough.
The Owls boss spoke of the importance of the match before the weekend with previous top-two Charlton Athletic and Huddersfield Town facing each other at The Valley on Monday night.
Reda Johnson's first-half header gave Wednesday three points and an eighth win from nine home league matches this season to see them leapfrog the Terriers up to second in npower League One.
And it was 'job done' as far as Megson was concerned, saying: 'We've talked all week about the importance of this game and that was a hard-fought win.
'With Charlton and Huddersfield playing each other on Monday, we needed the win and I'm really pleased we got it.
'It's all about winning when you play for Sheffield Wednesday. I don't want to be talking to the Press after any game saying we played well, we are improving, but only having drawn the game.
'Leyton Orient are a good side, they have now lost only one game in eleven and our players can take a lot of credit.'
For Orient it ended a ten-game unbeaten run in all competitions but Russell Slade, the O's boss, felt the game could have been completely different had Tom Clarke's header dipped a few inches under the bar rather than rattle it.
'I think the important thing for me today was that we should have drawn first blood. It was a great little bit of build up and we have hit the crossbar with the header,' he said.
'Really, I think he should put that in. At this level, I think that's a golden opportunity to go 1-0 up against Sheffield Wednesday away from home. That was a little bit of a turning point from my point of view.'
