Owls in talks with Rams over Bywater

Derby County manager Nigel Clough has confirmed talks are on-going between the Rams and Wednesday over a deal for goalkeeper Stephen Bywater.

The experienced stopper is currently enjoying a loan spell at Hillsborough as cover for the injured Nicky Weaver and Owls boss Gary Megson has already revealed interest in signing him on a permanent basis.

And Clough has indicated that the Rams are prepared to off-load Bywater to S6 in January, telling the Derby Evening Telegraph: 'That is the feedback we are getting from Sheffield Wednesday and talks are ongoing about trying to do something.'

The 30-year-old has impressed since arriving at Wednesday on loan, making eleven appearances and playing a part in helping the Owls up to second in npower League One.

Would be delighted if we were to keep him. Simple as that.

What do we think is a suitable offer?

I think 200K would be a reasonable price. Lets hope a deal can be done. This guy is worth his weight in gold to us at the moment

Good question TMB and it probably explains why so many fees are 'undisclosed', which is another way of saying 'way too complicated'. There are probably a number of 'packages' involved, payments between clubs, between clubs and player, and let's not forget the opportunist parasite in the sharp suit. I'm guessing now, but if Bywater's current agreement with Derby was negotiated when they were in the PL he'll be on far money more than Wednesday would be willing to pay. Far more than Derby are willing to pay, that's why they're so keen to get shut. So maybe the deal depends on the player accepting a sizable reduction in pay linked to the security of a longer contract and the promise of regular football, with Derby receiving some payment to cover their outlay in wages for a player who no longer has a perceivable future with them. This may also called: 'The Clinton Morrison Effect' and in the interests of diplomacy can only be resolved in an undisclosed manner!

If negotiated Bywater's current agreement when Derby in the Premiership was, a lot more the boy would have cost, mmmmm.

Ladies & Gentlemen, honoured we are in our midst a true Jedi to have.

Would we sell/release Nicky Weaver if we sign Bywater?

i don't think we would have to pay anything for bymater. derby do not want him anywhere near their first team squad and they want him off the wage bill. he has done brilliantly for us and we need to sign him up asap but on no more than an 18 month contract. apparently he can lose the plot big style (which is what I'm told has happened at Derby) and once that's happened its time to say goodbye so its best not to give him a long contract!
