Bywater completes Owls move

Goalkeeper Stephen Bywater has completed a permanent move to Wednesday after being released by Derby County.

The 30-year-old has already enjoyed a loan stint at Hillsborough this season, making 12 appearances, but has now become a permanent member of Gary Megson's squad, signing until the end of the season.

The former West Ham stopper acted as cover for the injured Nicky Weaver but the pair will now battle it out for the number one jersey after Weaver made his return from injury in the 2-0 win at Preston on Saturday.

He's eligible to go straight into the Owls squad to face Tranmere Rovers at Hillsborough on Monday, subject to clearance from the FA and Football League.

Happy New Year to everyone. What a teriffic way to start proceedings in strengthening the squads depth. Lets hope that more arrivals are imminent, to make competition for places key. This makes for a healthy future on the pitch to match the healthy financial picture off it. Onwards and Upwards

Really delighted about this. GK is the one position that requires quality cover at all times and now we look set to see out the rest of the season with confidence. I can see Bywater being picked vs. West Ham (former club) and then Weaver coming back vs. Charlton (former club!) and after that Meggo will have a choice to make. Naturally, we want stability behind the defence but knowing there's top class competition on the bench must be good for concentration.
