'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Manager's Musings: Owls v Charlton

Owls boss Gary Megson was left to lament his side's below-par performance against a Charlton side he described as the best to visit Hillsborough so far this season.

Johnnie Jackson's superb first-half free-kick gave the npower League One leaders all three points and saw Wednesday suffer defeat on home soil for the first time this term.

And Megson had few complaints, pointing towards an under-par performance from too many of those in blue and white and a well-organised Addicks side.

'Charlton are the best side we have played this season. They have set the pace from day one and you can see why,' Megson told the official SWFC website.

'The last thing you can do is give a well organised side like Charlton a goal start but I have to say it was a terrific strike.

'We huffed and puffed without causing them any real problems and too many of our players were under par.

'Most of our lads were ten per cent below their normal game and you can't do that against anyone, let alone the league leaders.'

In contrast, proud Charlton boss Chris Powell was full of praise for his on-song side.

'I'm very proud of my players today. We dealt with a tough game against good opposition,' he told the official Charlton website.

'We stood up to everything that was thrown at us and the players showed a lot of resilience and character, words you have to use at times.

'We played some good stuff and created some good chances, and one piece of quality won the game from my skipper.

'For us to come here and get a clean sheet and come away with three points is fantastic.'

i dont think charlton were all that good yes a great free kick won it but we had agoal disallowed and 3 cleared of the line and to be honest did'nt play that well we lost that game on poor tactics and substitutions

According the BBC website, MM had said he's in limbo over Ben10 and he's "hoping to maintain the status quo" and have Marshall sign a new contract at Stoke and then be loaned back to us. Call me a pessimist but in my book, that means a loan is our only option and a permanent transfer is a pipedream... Gutted really but I can't see him coming back. Could've become an s6 legend in time.

That's how it looks CP, but I wouldn't necessarily accuse MM of lacking ambition. I don't really want to get started about agents either, but it's safe to say Ben10's spiv is holding out for more than Stoke are willing to offer a relatively untried 20 year-old. It's probably also fair to say Stoke are able to offer him more than we can (without exceeding our wage structure), but what we are able to offer is regular football and the chance to further enhance the profile/status he's enjoyed in the first half of the season. I assume we've put our best offer on the table and haven't had our hands snatched off so yes, it appears our best chance is if he signs for Stoke and comes back on loan. It's a shame, but it's also realistic.
