Owls pip Barnsley to Jones signing

Barnsley manager Keith Hill has revealed Wednesday beat the Reds to the signing of Bury winger Mike Jones last week.

The 24-year-old midfielder signed for the Owls for an undisclosed fee last week with his contract set to expire at Gigg Lane in the summer.

He went straight into the starting eleven fro Wednesday's clash with Charlton Athletic at the weekend but Hill has revealed he was keen to take him to Oakwell.

'We wanted to sign Jones, but unfortunately we didn't manage to get out of the starting blocks,' Hill told the Sheffield Star.

He added: 'It's nobody's fault we missed out on him, we knew he was out of contract in the summer, but they've obviously offered him some good money.'

The Owls triggered a release clause in Jones's Bury contract and the former Tranmere Rovers man penned a two-and-a-half year deal at Hillsborough.

Nope, but let's hope it's the start of a trend.

Hi andymac! How ya doin? Don't know about you, but I'm surprised MM is talking about bringing in three more players before the window closes again. I mean, I'm all for quality recruits and I realise one or two are bound to leave sooner or later, but aside from bringing Ben10 back (or replacing him with someone equally as good), who do we need?

Not sure I understand what's happening with the Ben 10 saga. We've got GM saying Ben must sign a new contract with Stoke before we can have him on loan again and then says someone may come in and buy him and we've lost him for good. What's wrong with us shelling out the money and having him on our books. Surely the squad is strong enough without making 3 more signings so buying Ben is the one signing we all want and forget the other two.

That's also my view of the squad numbers, for what it's worth. We seem to have strong cover for all positions except wide left. As for the Ben10 saga, and at the risk of repeating myself, I presume our best offer is on the table and his agent thinks he can hold out for more. Maybe he can, or maybe he's just trying to be clever, but I'm sure MM will stick by his principles at the end of the day and I doubt GM is prepared to wait too long before he brings someone else in, either on loan until the end of the season or as a permanent replacement. It's a shame and all that, he's become a popular young player with bags of promise but we mustn't allow our own objectives to be undermined at such a vital time.

OurMaurice Don't really know where else he could strengthen there is a danger though of upsetting the rythm we have got going There must be 3 or4 departing what we don't know about but I think he will be still trying to get a Right Back

Just getting Madine & Buxton back to full fitness is like signing two quality players, and Otsemobor hasn't done his chances any harm at Right Back. In the meantime, does anyone else think CO'G could do a job wide left leaving Lowe free to partner the goal machine?

Good shout OurMaurice and I read that Rochdale played O'Grady out wide left quite effectively so that's definitely an option. I can't see him being a huge goalscorer for us really!
