Former Owl Returns To England

Former Wednesday favourite Michele Di Piedi has made a return to football in South Yorkshire this week - joining League One side Doncaster Rovers on a short-term contract until the end of the year.

The former Owls striker has been on trial at Belle Vue recently and has impressed Rovers boss Dave Penney, who has rewarded him with a contract until the new year. Penney is looking to bolster his options in attack as Rover seek promotion to the Championship - where Di Piedi could face the Owls next season if he continues to impress.

Di Piedi told the official Rovers website: 'I left England when my child was ill but my wife wanted to come back to this area now instead of signing for Perugia. I wanted to come here because of the ambition and the chance now I am more older to win medals. I want to give the Doncaster fans success and show them what I can do'

The Italian was brought to Hillsborough by Paul Jewell in 2000 from Italian side Perugia after a successful trial at the club. He went on to bag seven goals for the Owls in a stint which involved him featuring mainly from the bench.

His spectacular overhead kick from the edge of the box in the Carling Cup tie with Sunderland not long ago will live long in the memory of Wednesday fans. And who will forget his last minute winner away at Birmingham with the 'shirt-on-corner flag' celebration!?

Rovers' Director of Football Mickey Walker told the Rovers official site: 'This is a great signing of a player who was hailed as a super signing back when he was 19 and played in Serie A when he was 17. We could only have looked at this type of player in the past but now we are attracting them to this club'

Vital Sheffield Wednesday wishes Di Piedi all the best for the future - but hopefully not against the Owls!
