Wednesday sack Megson

Wednesday have sacked manager Gary Megson.

The Owls' 1-0 derby day victory against Sheffield United on Sunday was Megson's last in charge, with Milan Mandaric today relieving the die-hard Owl of his duties.

Mandaric told the official SWFC website: 'This was a very difficult decision but one that has been taken with the best interests of Sheffield Wednesday at heart.

'We have 13 games to go of what is a critical season for our club and this decision has been taken because I believe we have a better chance of achieving our key aim of promotion by making the change.

'I fully understand this may not be the most popular decision amongst our supporters but I ask them to trust me, as they have done so whole heartedly during the time I have been at the club.

'Whilst we won what was a huge game last Sunday, I have looked at results before that to reach the conclusion which I believe is the right one for now and the future of Sheffield Wednesday.

'I take no decision lightly regarding this club and this one is no different.

'One chapter is closed and another one begins. We must now look forward and I hope to appoint a new manager as soon as possible to help achieve success for this club.'

Rumours circulated at the weekend that Megson would be leaving Hillsborough owing to a run of poor results before Sunday's derby.

Those rumours have now turned to fact, and Wednesday will be looking for a new manager to come in and help boost the Owls' promotion push.

ouch hows that for a kick in the arse??
Absoloute joke wtf is happening @ Hillsborough, 13 games left, 3rd in the league still a chance of automatic promotion and took 4 points from the Sheffield derby timing couldn't be worse he must have someone lined up but even then I'm not going to be happy unless it Jose Mourhino. Wonder if I can get a refund on my season ticket for next year?

F**king Disgrace!!! Best manager we've had in years and still up there in with a shout and Mandaric does this?? Not that Megson should ever have been sacked but i only hope to god Milan has got an amazing replacement lined up and by that i DON'T mean DAVE JONES!!!!!
Wednesday at heart.Thks for doing wot you could for club and best of luck with your future.Rumours of Dave Jones or Paul Ince having been spoken to by Manderic.Any truth in this rumour. Also hear Megsons reported MM for going behind his back?
you don't know what you doing
ecco owl
im gutted feel sorry for meggo
Hope whoever takes charge next plays with a bit of flair and makes our great club a little easier on the eye and nerves
Kettering OWL 1963
Please not Dave jones or defo Paul Ince! What about Fabio Capello or Rafa Banetez, their both out of work!! Knowing us we'll prob get Steve Bruce.
Colorado Owl
well totally shocked mm has panicked what do you have to do to keep your job these days he should have been given till end off season at least total farce.

Talking about changing horses midstream. I'm just gutted for the guy. This doesn't sit well at all, and it's just the off-field drama that we don't need. Thought for sure Sunday gave him a lifeline.
Colorado Owl
Wow I'm still in shock. Heard the paper talk over the weekend but thought nothing of it. A great bloke and a true fan of our great club. MM must have a replacement alreay waiting. All the best GM
An hour ago, I was still basking in glory. Piggies were losing and I thought we were right back in it! Whilst some of Megson's football has not been the best to watch, we were definately heading in the right direction. What now??? it surely won't be Ince, hope it won't be Jones! shocking!

Gutted for him,i didnt want him to start with but the way this as been done is not right. If MM wud av splashed the cash for Marshall we wudnt be in this mess to start with. Lets bring back Big Ron lol
I sed last week something wasnt right wen MM came out saying there was no truth in the rumour that Megson had quit. Then nothing on Wednesday player til jus b4 derby game from Megson.
oh god.
Terrible timing could have understood if we didnt win against the blunts, but in mm we trust who ever comes in the proof will be in the pudding on whether this was the right or wrong desision in 13 games time
JOKE simple as
Rumour has it that Lee Clark is at Hillsborough now
SWFC Tubes 84
Absorbed it a bit now. Think we let Sunday cloud our judgement a bit. We have been shocking in Feb and our away form has been terrible all season, loosing to all the bottom teams whichis why we are 5 behind pigs and a country mile behind Charlton. Maybe turn out to be right decision in long run, does depend on who we get though!! Keep the faith people, could be MM's first mistake or greatest masterstroke. P.s. Not Paul Ince or Lee Clark
Absolute disgrace after the highs of sunday yes results have'nt been great but you can see on sunday the players were behind meggo not happy at all !!!! Milan needs to find a decent replacement and i dont want Dave Jones or Paul Ince either.... The rumours will now start of who we may approach PAOLO DI CANIO anyone ??
@ BBC radio Sheffield new manager to be named in due course no caretaker to be named
SWFC Tubes 84
Disgusted! Ok results haven't been great, but we're third for gods sake and heading for the playoffs, I will not be happy of its jones, ince, or Clarke other than that can't thInk of anyone else. Maybe he's prised old pal Harry lfrom the spurs and fa
Football has gone crazy- unbelievable sacking
Whoever takes the poisoned chalice needn't think about relocating to S6 as I am sure that he will be gone by the end of the season.
Where's that bell end Megson_out?? Don't tell me he's not realised his dreams have come true!! This is just a joke the timing stinks and if we end up with Dave Jones then that's Karma for all the fans who didn't realise what a good job Meggo was doing. What he's done with Reda is nothing short of miraculous! He's done loads more don't get me wrong, but his work with Reda is unbelievable.
Well it a fact it's nobody in a job at the moment, because this tight git will not spend any money, as for people out of jobs : Clark Jones Ince Mccarthy Bruce no thanks.
ecco owl
The time to ditch Megson was back in October when it was clear his predictable style of football would only ever secure the odd scrappy 1-0 victory like Sunday but never once play anyone ANYONE off the park. Fact is Mandy was wrong to appoint him and he was wrong to stick with him. But sacking him now with so few games left to play I agreee smacks of panic. But if whoever takes over gets us automatic promotion, who amongst you lot will complain then eh?? Even the most deluded Megsonite will look back and say this was Mandy's finest hour WTID
Could it be Sean O'Driscoll?????????????????????????????
If MM doesn't get this appointment right PLUS promotion, then his popularity with supporters will drop to ZERO - much like the money he gave (i.e. didn't) to Megson for the necessary signings which would have brought automatic promotion. It makes no sense at all - why spend multi-millions to buy the club then spend next to nothing on players. Gary Megson has been sold down the river and I bet he was promised a lot more by MM than he got. I hope Gary Megson goes on to find a job at another club with a more trustworthy chairman. He deserves much better than this.
Perhaps there was a problem in Monaco???
since the new year our results haven't been good enough. i agree that megson has done a lot of good in sorting out the playing staff but he also threw two matches and that for me was unacceptable in a professional sports club. the timing couldn't be worse but mandaric has done it before and been proved correct, he pulled us back from the brink and we all knew he was trigger happy before he came. so don't be surprised, get behind mandaric and the whoever we get next. Good luck Gary and thanks for the good work you did
Hirsty's Shinpads
Upset - Yes, Sorry for Megson - Yes, Bad word to say about Milan Mandaric - Well he is a bit trigger happy but lets see what he has planned, he will always be popular, he saved our club. Bali is spot on about Reda and the way the players are playing for him was what was key in my eyes. I love the fact he was taking them up in the stands and telling them about the club and he did many things very well. I doubt another manager will get a lot more out of this side. We will see. I felt Megson might struggle in the Championship although his record disputes that, this side would need a lot of investment. Very difficult to see who to blame here. I see the ambition in sacking him but I think sticking with him would have been less of a gamble. Very interested to see this appointment.
Listen i think we should all hold the phone here about slagging MM.This guy pulled us from the brink and turned us around. He is no mug not like our former chairman and is a bussiness man.In bussiness if you dont deliver your gone.MM wants automatic promotion and he has let Gary build his own team and the results have not been good enough thats why we are where we are.I belive Gary should have been given to the end of the season but MM belives if action is not taken now we could drop out the playoffs all together.I would like to see Mick Macarthy at the club, not Ince or Jones the names touted about.
At the end of the day, He's gone. whether this is the right decision will become clear after the next 13 games - If we get promotion, we'll be glad he did it, if we miss promotion (and it will serve MM right if we don't) then it will be the wrong choice. No caretaker manager has been announced, so I expect a new manager before saturdays game.
I suspect that MM intended this NOW before last Sunday's result and irrespective of what that result might be. It's a very bold throw - and it's a big gamble. Unfortunately, the next manager will probably not be a Wednesdayite - but they're professionals and no doubt committed to the cause they adopt. A new man will have the advantage of not carrying any blame and the players will likely respond in an attempt to gain the new bloke's favour. What a game - literally: I feel sorry for GM, the timing is lousy; I can only try to imagine how he must feel.
cheshire cat
No need to speculate - who? He's chosen and short of a hitch, MM's choice is already signed up and waiting in the wings.
cheshire cat
Lets have an up-to-date site poll - who will be the next manager, rather than waiting until someone is announces (Which, IMHO will be later today.)
Stats say 44% win rate which lets face it isnt very good for a promotion chacing manager. However you still dont jump the gun and potentialy shoot yourself in the foot. Lee Clarke and Gary Megson should have been allowed to finish the job. I would hate to stay in this division but if it wasnt ment to be then fair enough at least things were hell of alot better this season than many others before. Milan you will always be a legend for saving our club but but i feel like many others ive lost a little respect for you.(even if we do go up now) Dave Jones would probably be the replacement so with this, past years show he does a fair job but always struggles with promotion through the playoffs.
Bolton fan here. Whilst Megson will never be the most loved man this side of The Pennines it is an absolute joke that he has been sacked by Wednesday. He was at a club he loved, which came across everytime he was interviewed, and was doing a good enough job to be allowed to continue. I heard the news driving up the M1 and, in true Ashley Cole style, nearly crashed my Polo. Good luck to you for the rest of the season. I fear without Megson, we won't be meeting in the Championship next season.
