Sturrock Targets Cup Run

Owls boss Paul Sturrock hopes Wednesday can 'do a Sheffield United' and raise some much needed cash with a good cup run - starting in the Carling Cup against Wrexham tomorrow night.

Wednesday have struggled in cup competitions in recent seasons, with their most recent success coming in 2002 when they faced Blackburn Rovers in the semi-final of the Carling Cup. The run enabled Wednesday to bring in Shefki Kuqi from Stockport County.

And the Owls boss is hoping for much of the same this term as he looks to bolster his depleted squad.

He told the official SWFC website: 'The chairman has emphasised that we need the finance of a Cup run. Sheffield United have had some good Cup runs which put millions in the coffers and I'd like to think we can do the same.'

He continued: 'I want the continuity of the team going through from Saturday and building up. We've got to get everybody realising the way we want the game played and the only way you can do that is by playing competitive games. My worry is that it'll be the day after the Lord Mayor's show. We have to be focused on this game and not think about what's coming on Sunday.'

The Owls face League Two side Wrexham in the first round of the Carling Cup at Hillsborough on Wednesday night. The Welsh outfit are currently unbeaten in League Two so far this season.

The Owls boss said: 'Wrexham are a good side who haven't lost this season. We've still got a lack of strikers and it's going to be hard enough to score goals without going out with a bad attitude.'

Sturrock will welcome back Lee Bullen to the Owls squad following his three-match suspension. Bullen may fill the vacant strikers gap following the injury to Wade Small at Plymouth at the weekend.

But Brad Jones will be missing as part of the loan deal that brought him to Hillsborough from Middlesbrough. Graham Coughlan is also a doubt after picking up a knock in the weekend victory at his former club.
