Owls to sign Kirkland from Wigan

Wednesday have announced their first signing of the summer in Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Chris Kirkland.

The 31-year-old stopper is out-of-contract with the Premier League club and he'll sign a two-year contract at Hillsborough in July.

The England international goalkeeper has seen his career largely blighted by injury but he's keen to get back to regular first-team action after being back-up at the DW Stadium in recent campaigns.

'This is a fantastic move for me and I am delighted to be here,' Kirkland told the official SWFC website.

'There have been stories about injuries but I have been fully fit for the last two seasons at Wigan and really frustrated at being a number two.

'I'm chomping at the bit to start playing again and to join a club like Sheffield Wednesday at this time is a great move.

'Everybody saw what happened at Hillsborough on the last day of the season and to think that I will be part of that is really exciting.'

Jones has offered Stephen Bywater, the Owls' number one last season, a new deal to remain at Hillsborough alongside young stopper Aaron Jameson, but Richard O'Donnell was allowed to move on to Chesterfield.

If we can keep him fit would be a quality signing very surprised by this as he was'nt a player mentioned

Bywater, Weaver, Jameson........ Kirkland? We got rid of ROD for Kirkland? Not 100% sure on this one, no offence to Kirkland but we had a good young keeper in ROD and a fan to boot. Hmmm, cards held close to chest on this one. Hope he's a good aquisition UTO WTID WAWAW.

Brilliant Signing. On the topic of ROD, I would have rather kept him than Bywater however I would think it likely that he left due to wanting 1st Team Footie that we just couldnt provide.
tomawest
all about his fitness.

Not to sure, bywaters been good enough I thought, maybe weavers Not comin back? Can't figure it out but either way competitions good

a good signing I think. has weaver departed? i keep reading a few negative comments on bywater, i don't get it cos he's done better than most goalies we've had recently

... Hope there's no truth in the link to Emile Heskey...
Carbone's Padawan
Definitely surprising. So does this mean bye-bye-Bywater? Can't see us keeping three goalies over the age of 31. I'm guessing MM has made his best offer and that's it. No deal. I'm now expecting news of Beevers & JJ signing up real soon or else they'll be history too.

if this signals the intent on the sort of quality we'll be signing the next few months could be interesting. Lets keep DJ's unbeaten record as manager going as long as possible into next season and see where it takes us.

Carbone's Padawan I would not be suprised if its true mate. Already signed two free transfers and got another potential freeby training with us with a view to signing Heskey is a Freeby also. Is this sounding familiar We already have our Heskey in O'Grady a smashing lad who works his nuts off but does not score goals and is nowhere near on the floor as much as Heskey. Time will tell I suppose

would quite like to see Koumas sign up if he can get his fitness up. Always rated him. As for Heskey, I agree AndyMac, I'd take O'Grady over Heskey really. I'd like to see us bring in a striker who brings something different to the table though - a bit of pace maybe?
Carbone's Padawan
can't see it happening with Koumas. He's 33 and hasn't played football this year, he must be miles off the pace. i'd prefer COG over Heskey. signing a 31 year old goal keeper is one thing but signing 33, 34 year old midfielders and forwards who will want big money is a no no for me, it's a road we've been down too many times in the past and invariavbly had our hands burnt
