Owls to sign Gardner from Palace

Wednesday will sign defender Anthony Gardner on a two-year deal when his contract with Crystal Palace expires this summer.

The former Tottenham Hotspur centre-back has been linked with a move to Hillsborough for a number of weeks and Wednesday have confirmed the deal this afternoon.

The 31-year-old arrives at S6 with a wealth of experience under his belt, having played for England, in the Premier League and most recently in the Championship with the Eagles.

Owls boss Dave Jones has been looking to bolster his defensive options to deal with higher-division football next term. Danny Batth impressed on a season-long loan from Wolves but he's expected to remain with Wanderers.

Gardner becomes Wednesday's fourth signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Chris Kirkland, Kieran Lee and Joe Mattock.

Solid signing, starting from the back! Looking forward to us getting hold of some wingers and strikers now we've got this solid base to start from.

Hard to question his credentials, assuming he stays fit. But did we really need another left-sided defender? It's on the right side where we're thin on the ground. We need Danny Batth back asap and then someone else besides to act as cover.
