'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Former Owl in with Olympic chance

A former Wednesday youth player is in with a chance of qualifying for the London Olympics at the Aviva UK Trials in Birmingham this weekend.

Mukhtar Mohammed came through the Hillsborough youth ranks and looked destined for a future in football before turning his attentions to the athletics track a few years ago.

A place in arguably the biggest sporting event in the world is now just 800 metres away for the runner, who competes in the final of the event at Birmingham's Alexander Stadium later today at the Aviva UK Trials.

Mohammed, who took bronze in the European U23 Championships last year, won his heat in a time of 1:50.9 to qualify for today's final.

He'll need to finish in the top two and secure the A qualifying time of 1:45.60 to guarantee a place in Team GB this summer - his personal best so far this year is 1:46.17 - enough to secure a B qualifying standard.

To my English brothers and sisters in the Blue & White... so sorry to see England's exit from Euro 2012. The Mrs. and I were rooting for you guys, and after the game I saw a number of my fellow Yanks wearing the England Kit around town. Here's to drowning sorrows in a good pint and then in an explosive return to the Championship for the Owls! UTO
Wednesday in Iowa
Hi there, Wednesday in Iowa. Yep, disappointment on this side of the pond too but watching England is a gruelling experience these days. And especially when the team's set up to concede possession willingly, maintain a rigid shape come what may and rely on heroic defending in and around the six-yard box or else a lucky break and a quick counter. I said gruelling but vs. Italy it was really quite embarrassing. Yikes! It's not all bad though, at least we have three potentially cracking matches to look forward to and surely it has now been confirmed, once and for all, that far from being 'World Class' Rooney is the same over-hyped and grossly overrated waste of space that 'appeared' in South Africa two years back. Gross being the operative word; two yards short on pace and too fat to jump. And he can't even blame lack of fitness this time. Lack of ability and mental strength? Yes. Aside from Ashley Young he was our worst player of the tournament by a country mile, so why didn't Hodgson drag 'em both off? We kept a clean sheet but lost a lot of friends. Never mind, as much as I'd always like to see England do well it's what's happening at Hillsborough that really counts and so far things seem to be ticking along very nicely. Fingers crossed for the return of Batth & Antonio. That's not too much to ask, is it?
