McAuley leaves Wednesday for the USA

Owls academy manager Sean McAuley has left the club to become assistant head coach of MLS side Portland Timbers.

The 40-year-old used to play for the Timbers and, after spending seven years at Hillsborough, will return across the pond to take up a coaching role with the club next month.

McAuley said: 'It is a massive wrench for me to be leaving Sheffield Wednesday but this opportunity is a great one for me at this stage of my career.

'Hillsborough is not a place I want to leave but Portland is a place I want to go.'

McAuley is well respected with Owls fans and staff alike, as well as with coaches involved in the game across the country.

As well as his success with the academy, including producing young players to progress through to the Wednesday first team, he also took charge of the first team on two occasions.

I disagree also. In the last 10 years our youth set up has produced a small handfull of players who have made our first team and even less who have then gone on to produce anything worthwhile. also in this period our youth teams have performed badly, regularly getting beaten which is not instilling confidence into any of those young players. it was time for a change anyway. good luck tho in the states sean
