Owls International Round-Up

Wednesday may have had a week off from domestic competition but it was business as usual for three players called-up for International duty with their nations.

Glenn Whelen, Chris Brunt and Madjid Bougherra were selected to represent Republic of Ireland under-21s, Northern Ireland under-21s and Algeria respectively in their important qualifying matches at the weekend.

Whelen, currently on the Owls transfer list despite an impressive start to his second season in the Championship, played the full ninety minutes in the Republic of Ireland's under-21 1-0 defeat at home to Belgium on Friday night.

The former Manchester City product did his best to grab an equaliser for the hosts as he fired a blistering long-range strike just over the bar after the half hour mark. The midfielder then created Ireland's best chance of the game when he put Ward through on goal but he was unable to find the equaliser.

Northern Ireland seemingly missed Chris Brunt as he failed to make the sixteen for their 3-0 home defeat to Iceland on Saturday. But boss Lawrie Sanchez may draft the winger in for his side's tough match with Spain in midweek.

Meanwhile, highly-rated Owls defender Madjid Bougherra was selected for Algeria's respectable 0-0 draw in Guinea as his nation looks to qualify for the African Cup of Nations.
