Sheffield Wednesday Football Club celebrates its 139th birthday today, the 4th September. We at Vital Sheffield Wednesday wish the club many happy returns!
It was the evening of Wednesday 4 September 1867 when members of 'The Wednesday Cricket Club' met at the Adelphi Public House (now the site of the Crucible) to announce the club was to extend to include a football club as well as the cricket club.
Of course, the club was called 'The Wednesday CC' because of the members desire to meet on Wednesdays due to their half-day at work. And the idea of a football club came around initially to keep the cricket players fit during the winter months, and bond them closer.
You may have noticed that the football side of things took a turn for the good of Sheffield, and Wednesday are now one of the most famous football clubs in England, and well known worldwide.
The club was formed just four years after the football association, and indeed ten years after the world's oldest football club - Sheffield FC who were formed in 1857. Hallam FC then followed in 1860, but it was 'The Wednesday' who were to win the Sheffield public over, and of course become the biggest club in the steel city.
Wednesday played at Olive Grove for much of their early years but finally moved to Owlerton in April 1899 after a short stint at Bramall Lane. Luckily for us Wednesday officials decided against it a permanenent home there and opted to Owlerton.
The first 139 years have certainly been eventful (and in particular my 22 years as an Owl) for 'The Wednesday' - here's to another successful 139! HAPPY BIRTHDAY WEDNESDAY!
