Owls linked with Sunderland's Wickham

Wednesday have been linked with the loan signing of Sunderland's hot propsect Connor Wickham.

Owls boss Dave Jones is understood to be keen on bolstering his attacking options to help Wednesday out of their current rut and Wickham is way down the pecking order at the Stadium of Light.

The emergency loan window closes later this month and Jones is set to allow Gary Madine go out on-loan to League One side Swindon Town, despite playing and scoring in the Owls' 3-1 loss at Middlesbrough on Friday, and bring another man in - reported to be Wickham.

The 19-year-old burst onto the scene with Ipswich Town and Sunderland forked out £8 million for his services in 2011 but he's yet to make a big impression on Wearside and has yet to feature this season.

A loan move away from the Black Cats would be beneficial for Wickham in terms of first-team opportunities and Wednesday are understood to be one of a number of Championship clubs trying to secure his services.

he'd be a good addition but only if we change the formation around. just putting him in for Madine/COG up front wouldn't offer us a massive amount more imo

We have a 22yr old striker, last year's leading goalscorer, who has just broken his duck. Who, hopefully, will be in a position to put a long-running legal wrangle behind him by the middle of the week and concentrate solely on football. Should we be farming him out on loan only to replace him with a 19yr old who clearly can't cut the mustard at a club with one of the poorest goalscoring records in the country? This just keeps on getting worse!

This seems weird to me because we already have 5 strikers that DJ has barely given a chance to and it seems really, really obvious that we have some serious defensive problems. Gardener and Taylor just don't look up to it and we look like we are going to concede at least 2 goals every game. Doubt he'll swallow his pride and go for another defender but I reckon we would have done as well with Rob Jones. Kirkland is a decent keeper but I think Bywater isn't far behind and offers more to the defence. I think its all a bit of a mess.

We are desperate for a striking partnership and I reckon Rodri is the one DJ wants to be on his team sheet but neither COG or Madine complement his style of play hense this may be the reason rightly or wrongly he wants to offload to Barnsley & Swindon. Maybe If I am correct the 442 system will be back!! Wicham is a powerful lad who plays on the shoulder of defenders and not an out & out target / hold up man. I dug out the old videos last night watched a bit of Hirst & Williams cracked open a bottle of Vodka ended up putting a Smiths record on luckily enough I chose the Peanut M&Ms

andymac- that sure sounds like a recipe for something! Alternatively, you might wanna try some old footage of Carbone & di Canio, a nice bottle of chianti, PFM's "Photos Of Ghosts" and a cornetto!

baldowl; Bywater, I've been barking up that particular tree since August! He never let us down last season and signed a new contract in the summer. So far this season he's played twice, both against Prem opposition, kept one clean sheet and conceded twice (one of those a contentious penalty). Kirkland on the other hand has played 17, kept one clean sheet and conceded thirty-one. It's a rotten time for Bywater to get pneumonia but something tells me he would't get a look-in anyway, and I can't imagine why. He's a fine goalkeeper.

I reckon Bothroyd has more chance of going in goal than Bywater...and that would be funny if I wasn't joking. We need goals and we can't get away from that but there is definitely something wrong at the back. Its a tough league but we are pants in defence and the team just doesn't have the steel that Megson finally brought back.

I would say a good centre back would be a more valuable asset to get on loan, big young lad with prospects who has a decent left foot and a bit of pace, wonder if Milwall would let us borrow that young Mark Beevers. Think he might do well!
Waddle1993
Good call, Waddle1993. And I'm sure he formed a useful partnership in central defence with Miguel Llera that secured us three wins on the trot back in August. But that seems like a long time ago, doesn't it?
OurMaurice
I see this story keeps rumbling on and I can't think why. If DJ drops Bothroyd (or better still sends him back to QPR) then whoever he brings in to replace him will be like signing a new player! Only there'll be less risk and no added expense involved because he'll already be one of ours! It's so simple (I should be doing this for a living!)
