Helan returns to Manchester City

Helan returns to Manchester City

Jeremy Helan has returned to Manchester City following his loan spell at Wednesday - but the Owls are understood to be keen on bringing the youngster back to Hillsborough.

The 20-year-old's successful loan stint in S6 came to an end following the 0-0 stalemate against Wolves on Saturday and, for the meantime at least, the Frenchman has returned to the Premier League champions.

Owls boss Dave Jones is understood to be eager to bring Helan back to Wednesday in time for Saturday's trip to Charlton Athletic in the league, however, and is working hard to get a deal done.

Helan made eleven appearances for the Owls and was generally involved in an upturn in Wednesday's season, helping them climb out of the Championship's bottom three.

He played well in his initial stint at left-back but shone when moved further forward and was used as a threatening attacking outlet, chipping in with one goal along the way.

Let's be honest here, DJ's record in the loan market has been POOR. Helan is probably the pick of the bunch, but not as left back where I thought he looked weak (especially vs. Leicester & Watford) but higher up the pitch. But that's only going to work if DJ persists with a formation containing four full backs and two 'wingers' sprinting down the middle. Maybe ManC don't want him playing there (remember last season - Tavernier/ Newcastle?). So unless we can bring him back permanently (unlikely) I'd prefer to see Mattock at left back and Reda upfield getting his head on crosses from the right. Or better still, leave Reda where is his, play our wingers out wide and get them to deliver crosses to a two-man strike partnership like... (I dunno) Madine & Maguire. Or Rodri. Or CO'G & Pecnik. Or perm any two from five. Or Lavery. Or that other kid who keeps banging 'em in for the U21s. Or me! I'll do it. Just not Sidibe, okay? And don't even THINK about bringing Bothroyd back!

The latest word here suggests Sidibe won't be coming back (phew!) but that's for family reasons and not because he's rubbish. Rodri is being lined up for a return to Spain (pity really, was he ever given a chance to impress?) and Lavery is on his way to Southend on loan. So by my reckoning that just leaves Madine, CO'G, Maguire, Pecnik and yours truly. Best dig out those old boots then!
